My scanner has recently started to act up, It wasn't scanning the top of the documents, then it wouldn't connect, now it is failing to scan. When I go to the printer webpage it only notes in more details that it is a critical scanner failure, but I don't know what it is about the scanner that is failing. Where can I find troubleshooting for this and how to fix it?

I might add, the printer has been occasionally been acting up, the menu is toggling through on selections but won't respond to me selecting, and sometimes when it does this, I can not turn the machine off with the power button, I have to pull the plug.

I was able to resolve the issue by unchecking the Enable Scan to Computer box and rechecking. Also had to restart the printer and computer. However, while I can scan from the computer, I can not scan from the printer because it wants a workflow in Automator which does not work.

Also sometimes the connection error shows in HP Utility but the scan will still work when initiated from the computer. Restarting the computer then restarting the printer seems to be resolving that.

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Are you able to copy?

Let's try to reset the Printer here:

Reset the product

  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • Wait at least 60 seconds.
  • Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
  • Reconnect the power cord to the printer.
  • Turn the printer on. HP recommends plugging the printer directly into a wall outlet.

Also, try connecting the Printer to a different wall outlet directly.

Try a firmware update: https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/ish_1776648-1643972-16

Let me know if this helps.

No, the solution you provided did not work. The printer had an  error message that instructed me to unplug and plugin again, after which I was able to copy, but when I tried to scan, it came up with an error message on my computer screen:

Scanner reported an error
The scan was not completed because the operation was cancelled while scanning was in progress.

On the printer screen error message was could not scan, copy or email fax.

The printer is also not turning off using the power button.

I checked the HP Utility on my Mac and under status is: Communication Error - Unable to communicate with device. Check cables and connection settings. If the problem persists, try restarting your computer and HP device.

Note printer is connected wirelessly. Icon on printer says it is connected.  I can print from my computer to the printer.
