HP Deskjet 4535
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello everyone.

I've been having problems with my Deskjet 4535. It just won't scan. I've had this problem since I used Windows 7 (32-bit). I just did a fresh install of Windows 10 Home (64-bit) and the computer runs like clockwork. Then I proceded to install the printer drivers and everything went normally. When scanning for the first time (from the computer) it went well, but after I rebooted the computer for the first time, it stopped working. And it newer worked again. The scanner won't communicate with the computer. I've tried reinstalling the drivers at least three times.

So, to sum everything up:
- computer with a fresh install of Windows 10 Home (64-bit)
- the scanner of a HP Deskjet 4535 (connected via USB) won't work

- installed the latest drivers

- upgraded to the latest firmare

- Windows Image Acquisition service set to automatic

- tried scanning via MS Paint, Windows Scan, HP Scan and Capture

- Print and Scan Doctor doesn't solve anything

Scanning via the button on the device never really worked. It lists my computer, but when I pick it I get the notice that there's a connection problem (meanwhile nothing happens on the computer).

I tried Google, but all I could find is that it's a pretty common problem.

Any help or suggestions, please?

@KiNgKoNgX

Welcome to HP Forums,

This is a great place to get support, find answers and tips to your technical queries.

To provide you with an accurate solution, I'll need a few more details:

Is the copy working fine?

However, Download and run HP Print and Scan Doctor

Install HP Print and Scan Doctor on the computer connected to your printer.

  1. Make sure your printer is turned on and connected to the computer.

  2. Download HP Print and Scan Doctor, and then follow the on-screen prompts to install and open the tool.

  3. On the Welcome screen, click Start to view a list of available printers.

  4. Select your printer in the list, and then click Next.

If your printer is not listed or a connection problem is detected, click My product is not listed or select your connection type, follow the on-screen instructions, and then click Retry.

Example of a list of available printers

  5. Click either Fix Printing or Fix Scanning.

If you are prompted to install the printer software, follow the on-screen instructions. The software can resolve many printer issues.

Example of a list of available printers

  6. Review the list of test results, and then resolve any issues found.

    • If you see a checkmark, the printer passed the test.

    • If you see a wrench, HP Print and Scan Doctor found an issue and repaired it.

    • If you see an exclamation point, the test failed and required user action, but the step was skipped.

    • If you see an X, follow the on-screen instructions to resolve the issue.

Example of the results screen with a problem detected

Try to scan.

If the issue persists, Assign Manual IP to the printer

1) Print a Network configuration page from the printer's control panel.

2) Look for IP address from the Network configuration page.

3) Open web browser - Chrome or IE or any other browser that you are using.

4) Type the IP address mentioned on Network configuration page into the browser's address bar or URL bar and press enter button.

5) Go to the Network tab.

6) Click on Networking from the left pane.

7) Then click on Network Address (IP).

😎 Click on Manual IP Address and go to suggest a Manual IP.

9) Scroll down the screen and select Manual DNS server.

10) Enter the Primary and secondary DNS server from the Network Configuration page into the Manual Preferred DNS server field.

11) Click on Apply.

Refer to the video link for step by step instructions - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SCnYyq80V9g

Note: The video is for win 8 but steps are similar for other operating systems as well. You need to enter the IP address in the browser's URL or the address bar to access the printer page.

Keep me posted, how it goes!

Thank you for trying to help, but I'm affraid there is no permanent solution for this. As I've said, I've already tried the P&S Doctor but it always choked sooner or later.

In the last try, there was an exclamation point next to 'Driver check.' As mentioned, I've tried reinstalling the drivers multiple times. So I skipped that step, and it froze on 'Windows (VIA) Scan.' After a reboot, I tried if the copying works, and it did, and then all of a sudden the scanning started to work again. I did a couple of shutdowns and reboots and it still worked, then after another reboot it stopped. And then a few reboots later, and after turning the printer on and off a couple of times, it started working again. So... Yeah, about as random as you can get.

Assigning a manual IP didn't work either. I already tried that but forgot to mention.

I reviewed your conversation and understand that you are facing issues scanning.

Awesome job on diagnosing the issue correctly and performing smart troubleshooting before posting your question on HP forums. Kudos to you on that score.

I recommend you create a new user account on the computer and install the printer on the new account and check whether the issue is resolved.

Follow the steps in the below artilce to create a new user account.
