I had to uninstall and reinstall my Laserjet M1217NFW MFP multifuntion printer and the icon has disappeared from my desktop.  How can I get it back?  Or at the very least how can I access the scanner function if I can't get the icon back?

Hi @jeannehedges,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If the desktop icon for your HP LaserJet M1217NFW MFP has disappeared after reinstalling the printer, you can try the following steps to either restore the icon or access the scanner function.

Restoring the Desktop Icon

Check Printer Software:

  • Open the HP printer software on your computer. You can usually find it by searching for "HP" or the printer model name in the Start menu search bar.
  • Look for an option to create a shortcut or desktop icon within the printer software settings.

Manually Create a Shortcut:

  • Navigate to the folder where the printer software is installed. This is typically in C:\Program Files (x86)\HP or C:\Program Files\HP.
  • Find the executable file for the HP software (e.g., HP Smart or a similar name).
  • Right-click the executable file and select "Create shortcut."
  • Drag the newly created shortcut to your desktop.

Accessing the Scanner Function

Using HP Smart:

  • If you have HP Smart installed, open it from the Start menu.
  • Select your printer from the list of devices.
  • Click on the "Scan" tab or icon to access the scanning functions.

Using Windows Scan App:

  • Open the Windows Scan app by searching for "Scan" in the Start menu.
  • Select your printer from the list of available devices.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to perform a scan.

Using HP Printer Assistant:

  • Open the HP Printer Assistant by searching for it in the Start menu.
  • Navigate to the "Scan" section and follow the prompts to initiate a scan.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
