HP ENVY Photo 6234 All-in-One Printer
macOS 12.0 Monterey

I have been scanning multiple photos today. All of a sudden, the Detect Separate Items/Detect Enclosing Box has stopped detecting.

I select OVERVIEW and nothing is detected - it just views the 4 photos sitting on the panel. I've switched the printer off/on and rebooted my Mac...neither made any difference.

Then I had an idea and I tried selecting each photo manually using the cursor. I was able to do this - I scanned them successfully.

I then put 4 more photos on the scanning surface, hit OVERVIEW and it's now successfully detecting automatically again.

This happened on my last HP printer which I had to replace when the scanner stopped working altogether.

This one is still within warranty.

Any ideas? I can't continue to waste time fixing this. I have a lot of photos to scan.

I'm using a Mac running the latest OS, Monterey 12.3.1

I'm using HP ENVY Photo 6200 series version 20 (594)

Welcome to the HP support community.

Which application are you using to scan?

Are you getting any error messages?

Hi Sandy - I'm using HP ENVY Photo 6200 series version 20 (594),  the software which was installed when I first started using the printer.

There are no error messages - for a split second "detecting enclosing box" pops up (it's so quick I can't tell exactly what it says) then disappears.

Now I've realised that I can draw a box around each item with the cursor, I must admit this is not as much of a problem as I first thought, when rebooting my Mac and turning the printer off and on didn't work.

In fact, after doing the manual drawing of boxes a couple of times, the automatic selection re-appears.

Something funny is going on, but it's not too annoying now

Update the printer firmware to install the latest updates on the printer

Here are the steps:- Click here

Update the Mac OS

  1. From the Apple menu  in the corner of your screen, choose System Preferences.
  2. In the System Preferences window, click Software Update.
  3. Click Update Now or Upgrade Now.

If this helps, please mark the public post as an accepted solution so that it benefits several others.

Keep me posted.

Cheers.

Thanks...I always update my Mac as soon as it tells me about available updates. I've gone to HP support and downloaded 2 update - firmware and drivers.  Firmware update said "Cannot update the device. The Firmware Updater does not contain upgrades for your device". This is a very confusing message! Does it mean my device already has the latest firmware loaded - or that the Firmware Updater is faulty/corrupted/whatever and does not contain the upgrades that it should?!

Could you share an image of the error that you receive?

Try scanning using a different application and check if that works fine?
