Does anyone know if it is possible to scan slides to save them digitally using a HP Photosmart 7520 printer?  I have got a special scanner to do 35 ml slides but these are slides which are approximately two and a quarter inches square and so do not fit.  Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

No, only a special scanner for scanning slides, HP Photosmart 7520 can't do that.
