Printhead shows undetectable or needing repair. While I work on that, will scanner and fax work? Do they use the print cartridges?

@qurious, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

While scanning/sending a fax does not require ink cartridges, if the printer is in an error state and if you are not able to bypass the error, you will not be able to use these features.

What is the exact error on the printer?

For now, kindly perform the steps from the document - Error Indicates Faulty Printhead.

If the error persists, I'm afraid this could be a printhead failure. Please reach out to the HP Support in your region regarding the service options for your printer.

If the printer is out of warranty, I suggest you upgrade the printer. You may visit Hp Store to check the available printers.

Keep me posted for any other assistance.

Thank you. You are right. I see that I cannot bypass the error alert on the screen (which says printhead missing or undetectable), so I guess that's why I cannot scan or fax (regardless of whether those functions use the printer cartridges). This has been a good multifunction printer, so I have ordered a newer model of it. Meanwhile, I am determined to try to repair the printhead; am waiting for an inexpensive syringe and tube in hopes of unclogging it (if that's the problem).

I understand. Purchasing a new printer is a good idea as the replacement printhead would cost you as much as a new printer. There are no instructions on how to repair a printhead as it is not a customer replaceable part. You may try to repair it. Hope it works.
