Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

I just bought an OfficeJet Pro 8020e series and the document feeder wont' scan when I scan from the dashboard.  It wants to just use the glass scanner

I have what seems like the same problem with a brand new Officejet Pro 9018 and I had the same problem with a brand new Officejet Pro 9015e.  The scanner scans from the screen fine; the copier copies from the screen or the automatic document feeder (ADF) fine.  But the scanner won't scan from the ADF.  The rollers don't grip the paper to pull it in from the ADF.  Any suggestions?  (HP chat support and telephone support proved useless.)

My husband has the same  printer at his office, he said his ADF doesn't scan either, he has to use the HP smart app on computer. I wonder if this printer doesnt come with the  feature to scan multiple documents from the  ADF. I don't have the patience to get online and "chat" with nobody and get on hold for ever  Maybe someone will read our post and have a suggestion

@Sue7225, @Bo50 Welcome to the HP Support Community!

I understand you are not able to scan from the ADF. To assist you better, does it not pick the paper?

Try making a standalone copy from the ADF and check if that works. By this, we can conclude if this is a hardware or a driver issue.

Reset the printer

  1. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  2. Wait at least 60 seconds.
  3. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
  4. Turn ON the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
  5. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you proceed.

Note: HP recommends connecting the printer directly to a wall outlet rather than a surge protector or a power strip.

Update the printer firmware

Perform the steps mentioned in this document - Automatic document feeder does not pick paper or feeds too many sheets

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Thank you for replying, Kumar.  As I originally wrote, I am able to use the ADF for copying.  The rollers do properly grip the paper from the ADF when I am copying.  I can also scan from the ADF, but only if I do so from my PC by locating the scanner icon and following the steps to scan from my PC.  When I do this, I can select the option of scanning from the ADF instead of the glass flatbed.  The rollers then properly grip the paper from the ADF for the scan.  So it's not a hardware problem with the rollers.

But scanning from the PC instead of directly from the printer is a time-consuming hassle.  I bought this printer with the expectation that I would be able to scan from the ADF simply by placing a sheet of paper in the ADF and pressing scan.  But that option doesn't seem to be available.  Please simply just tell me if this model wasn't built with that option.

...[continuing my reply]  Is it possible to somehow change the default on my PC so that when I scan directly from the printer I can scan from the ADF?  In other words, change any default from glass flatbed to ADF--is that possible?

@Bo50

As I understand, you would like to scan from the printer screen using the 'scan to computer' option.

This requires HP full-feature driver to be installed on the computer. Using this, you may set ADF as the default.

Click here to download the HP Full-feature driver if not already installed.

Once downloaded, make sure to run the file to start the installation and follow the on-screen instructions.

Open the HP Printer Assistant software(double click printer icon on the desktop screen)

Go to Scan > Scan to computer > Manage > Enable

Try scanning.

Let me know how it goes.

When I try to go to the support site it  is "UNAVAILABLE"  Cannot download any fix.

I'm having the same problem, can't use document feeder. Will return printer to store and buy printer from another company since no one seems to know how to fix this defective product.

The suggested fix from HP didn't work. I'm returning the 8020e to the store, getting a refund, and buying a printer from another company. HP products have seriously declined in quality since the last time I bought a printer from them.
