After printing a document, I notice that this document stays in the queue of my printer.

When I want to print another deocument, it says that there are document in the queue and so I can't print.

I have to switch off the printer, wait for a while, switch it on again, and mostly at that time I can print a new document.

Thank you for posting on HP Forums,

Riddle_Decipher is at your service.

As I understand the document stays in the queue after the printing job competes,

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:

Have you attempted to manually delete the print job and restart it?

Did you reset/restart the print spooler?

While you respond to that, here's what you need to know:

Whenever a print job is sent to the printer a file is created in Windows. Sometimes these files become corrupt and cause problems. To properly reset your printing environment, delete these print job files manually and restart both the computer and the printer.

View this video on YouTube.

  1. Turn off the printer using the power button and then unplug the printer power cord from the power outlet.

  2. Save your work. After using these steps, your current print jobs are lost and will need to be printed again.

  3. Open Windows Services using one of the following methods:

    • Search Windows for services, and click Services in the list of results.

    • On your keyboard, press Windows key ( ) + R, type services.msc in the window that opens, and then click OK.

  4. Scroll through the list of services and find the name Print Spooler.

  5. Right-click Print Spooler and select Stop.

Figure : Stop selection for Print Spooler Service

Service window the Print Spooler service selected from the Name list and the Stop selection called out.
  6. After the service has been stopped, close the service window and use Windows Explorer to browse to C:\Windows\System32\Spool\PRINTERS.

  7. Delete all files inside the PRINTERS folder.

  8. Shut down your computer from Windows.

  9. Make sure you printer has been unplugged for at least 60 seconds, and then plug the power cord into a power outlet.

  10. Turn on the printer using the power button on the printer.

  11. Turn on the computer and wait for Windows to open.

  12. Try printing again and note what happens.

    • If the printer prints, you are done.

    • If the print job becomes stuck again, continue to the next step.

Step 2: Use HP Print and Scan Doctor

HP provides a free tool called HP Print and Scan Doctor to diagnose and resolve printing and scanning problems. Download and run HP Print and Scan Doctor to quickly and automatically perform several troubleshooting tasks known to resolve this issue. When this link is clicked, HP Print and Scan Doctor is downloaded using your Internet browser's download capabilities.

Read and respond to the screens in HP Print and Scan doctor to automatically find and fix any printer problem. After you have finished using HP Print and Scan Doctor, try to print.

  • If the printer prints, you are done.

  • If the print job becomes stuck again, continue to the next step.

Thank you for your answer.

Yes, my printing job stays in the queue after printing : that’s my problem. And it blocks my next printing job.

Manually deleting this print job doesn’t work : when I delete a printjob that has been printed, the job stays at “deleting-printing”. It only goes away after power off the printer. But this can’t be a good solution !

Like you wrote, I stopped the printer spooler but that didn’t work either.

Deleting the files in c:\windows\System32\spool\printers doesn’t help : he says I can’t delete the file.

Thank you for replying with this detailed response 😉

I appreciate your time and efforts,

That said, I recommend you delete the driver at the root level and retry, follow the steps below:

1.) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features

2.) Select your HP Printer

3.) Select Uninstall

4.) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers

5.) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose `Delete' or `Remove Device'

6.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.

7.) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between "printui.exe" and "/s")

8.) Click on the "Drivers" tab

9.) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom

10.) Select Ok

11.) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows

12.) Close Devices and Printers

Then, use this link to access the HP website, find the drivers compatible with your windows and install it: https://hp.care/2B3MVQS

If you would like to thank me for my efforts to help you,

feel free to give me a virtual high-five by clicking the 'Thumbs Up' icon below,

Followed by clicking on the "Accept as solution" button.

Have a great day!

I am sorry to say that the problem remains the same !

After having done every thing that you suggested (i had no problems there), I can print but the document stays in the print queue.

Any other suggestions ?

Thanks.

Thank you for responding,

It's great to have you back 😉

I understand your concern and don't worry, I have a few more steps to help resolve your concern:

Let's create a new user account and check if it works better on it, instead.

Also, if you have a wireless printer setup, I suggest assigning a static IP to resolve the issue and here's how to do it:

These settings are for setting up your wireless printer to stay connected to your router, keep wireless devices better connected and makes your router secure and hack proof.

  1. Set a static IP in the printer (click here) outside the DHCP range of the router (check your manual). This is for Linksys routers but can be used for all routers. Verify your DHCP range and change this first if needed. More Wireless Printing help is here (Windows solution 4, static IP).
  2. Verify in the printer that 'Auto Off/Sleep' is disabled.  Use the Embedded Web Server (EWS) by going to the printers IP address in your browsers address bar, click Settings Tab/Auto Off. Or use the Printer Assistant, Printer Home Page (EWS). Also check your Printers Properties.
  3. If the printer supports and has IPv6 enabled, turn off IPv6 in the printer.
  4. If needed and you assigned a static IP address, try using 8.8.8.8 for the Preferred DNS server and 8.8.4.4 at the Alternate DNS server.
  5. Verify the printer is on the latest firmware by checking with the HP Support site.

In the router: (Refer to your router manual for information)

  1. Use a fixed wireless channel like 1, 6 or 11, never 'auto', try channel 1 first then the rest.
  2. Set router to 20Mhz only, or 145Mbps depending on router.
  3. Always use WPA2-AES (Personal) encryption, but you can try ‘mixed’ mode.
  4. Disable WPS and never use it and disable UPnP for the routers security. Nobody can hack your system now and helps with wireless connectivity (if you want to know why, search the web).
  5. If you have a dual band router (2.4Ghz and 5.0Ghz bands), make sure the SSID’s are NOT the same, they must be different for all bands, even for any Guest networks.
  6. SSID broadcast must be enabled.
  7. Save all settings. Power off both, wait 2 mins.  Power on router wait 2 mins.
  8. Power on printer and verify it reconnects to router.

Windows 7/8/8.1 & 10 - Is Network Discovery on or off?

  1. Control Panel/Network and Internet/Network and Sharing Center/Advanced sharing settings.
  2. Under Home or Work (current profile) / Network Discovery.
  3. Select "Turn on network discovery" and save changes.

hello,

sorry to have waited this long in answering : I had a few weeks of very busy days at work.

The problem has been solved by re-installing the printer not as wifi but with a cable.

Now I can print as I should.

Thank you very much in helping me.

Greetings.

Guido

You're most welcome. 🙂

I'm glad that the printer is working fine now with a cable.

Happy printing! 🙂

I've seen a lot of unresolved posts about this issue and felt it my civic duty to say that I just disabled bi direction printing in the port settings and resolved the issue.  Had the same issue with an HP 1600 series that was corrected by the same solution.  Hope this helps someone else.
