Even though this printer does not have automatic double-sided scanning, I've been able to manually scan double-sided documents on my Mac using the HP Easy Scan app for years, and it works great. But today I set up a new Macbook Air and the Easy Scan app is no longer available. The software HP forces me to use (HP Smart) is terrible by comparison, and won't allow me to scan double-sided documents. What's the solution to this problem?

Hi @DeedleDoodle,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
I'd be happy to help you!
If the Easy Scan app is no longer available, and you find that the HP Smart app is not meeting your needs, you can consider using alternative scanning solutions for your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283cdw and the new MacBook Air. Here are a few options:
Apple Image Capture:
- Use the built-in Image Capture application on your MacBook Air. Connect your HP printer to your computer and open Image Capture. It should automatically detect your printer, and you can use it to scan documents or images.
Preview Application:
- Open the Preview application on your MacBook Air. From the "File" menu, select "Import from Scanner" or "Import from [Your Printer Model]." This can be a simple way to scan documents without additional software.
VueScan:
- VueScan is a third-party scanning application that supports a wide range of scanners and printers, including HP devices. You can download and install VueScan, then use it for scanning. Visit the VueScan website to check if your printer model is supported.
HP Easy Scan for Mac:
- While the Easy Scan app might not be available in the Mac App Store, you can still download it directly from the HP website. Go to the HP support website, search for your printer model, and download the HP Easy Scan application compatible with your printer.
HP Web Scanning:
- Many HP printers support web scanning. Access your printer's web interface through a web browser, and look for the scanning options. You may be able to initiate scans directly from there.
Check for Firmware/Driver Updates:
- Ensure that your HP printer's firmware and drivers are up to date. Visit the HP support website, search for your printer model, and download the latest firmware and drivers for macOS.
