Microsoft Windows 11

Still have a great Scanjet 5470C. Running on a Windows Vista computer because there is no driver for it in Windows 11. Would like to get rid of the windows Vista computer. I heard maybe someone could fashion a driver in dosbox but I am unsure about that. Please is there anyone out there that can help me?

Hi @Mr3Feat,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The HP Scanjet 5470C scanner is indeed from an era where drivers were available for older Windows versions like Vista, but it lacks direct support for Windows 11. Although using an emulation layer like DOSBox might be suggested for some hardware, it typically doesn’t support USB devices like scanners effectively. However, here are a few alternative options that might help you keep using your scanner without the Vista computer.

Windows Compatibility Mode and Older Drivers

  • Sometimes, installing the latest available driver (such as a Windows XP/Vista driver) in compatibility mode on Windows 11 can work. To do this:
    1. Download the last known driver for the HP Scanjet 5470C from HP’s website.
    2. Right-click the installer, choose Properties > Compatibility, and set it to run in compatibility mode for Windows Vista or XP.
    3. Run the installer and see if it allows the scanner to function.

Third-Party Scanning Software

  • Some third-party applications, like VueScan and Hamrick Software, include built-in drivers for older scanners. VueScan, in particular, supports a wide range of legacy scanners and might allow you to use your HP Scanjet 5470C on Windows 11.
    • You can check VueScan's compatibility for your model on their website and download a trial version to test it.

Virtual Machine with Vista or XP

  • If you have Windows 11 Pro, you can use Hyper-V or VirtualBox to create a virtual machine (VM) running Windows Vista or XP. This VM could run the scanner's drivers and software, allowing you to scan documents without the need for a dedicated Vista PC.
    • After installing the VM, connect the scanner through the VM’s USB settings. Then install the Vista driver as you would on a physical machine.

Repurpose with a Legacy PC for Occasional Use

  • If none of these methods work or feel too complex, consider keeping your Vista computer just for the scanner or using a refurbished Windows XP or Vista laptop solely for scanning. It’s a simple workaround and allows you to still keep your primary system uncluttered with legacy hardware concerns.

These solutions allow you to keep using your HP Scanjet 5470C without the need for DOSBox emulation, which likely wouldn’t help with USB scanner functionality.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
