Common problems HP Solution Center not working : Adobe Flash Player Error and Unable to scan
We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about HP Solution Center not working : Adobe Flash Player Error and Unable to Scan.
HP Recommended

I am trying to perform a Duplex Scan from the printer control panel and save this to my Computer as PDF. The printer only supports Manual Duplex scanning meaning I need to reinsert the document after scanning the first side of each sheet.

I have created a scan profile using 'HP Scan' on my PC. I set the 2-sided (manual) option in the profile. I then used 'HP Scan Assistant' to load this to the scanner. When I do this, my new profile appears on the LCD panel of the scanner. When I perform a scan using this profile and the ADF, it simply scans one side of the document and saves the result to the PC without prompting me to scan the second side. The are no setting options on the printer itself related to Duplex Scanning.

If I use the same profile, but start the scan using HP Scan on the PC, then it prompts me to reinsert the document to scan the second side.

Surely it is possible to initiate a Duplex Scan from the printer panel?

Hi @Glenn_146

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query.

I understand why this behavior would be confusing, especially since you've already created a manual duplex scan profile and successfully uploaded it to the printer using HP Scan Assistant.

As the profile is being recognized correctly by the printer, as it appears on the control panel. However, I'd like to clarify whether the issue is due to the printer's capabilities or if there's a configuration we may have overlooked. I would request you to please follow the steps:

To perform a manual duplex scan successfully:

  1. Load the original document into the ADF.
  2. Open HP Scan on your Windows computer.
  3. Select your custom scan profile (or create one with 2-sided (Manual) enabled).
  4. Click Scan.
  5. After the first side is scanned, HP Scan will prompt you to reinsert the pages according to the on-screen instructions.
  6. Reload the document with the reverse side facing the correct direction.
  7. Click Continue to scan the second side.
  8. Once both sides are scanned, the software will combine them into a single PDF.

Install HP Universal Scan Software

  • Install HP Universal Scan Software to enable the scan to computer function.
  • On your Windows computer, go to HP Universal Scan Software and download the driver.

Note:

Download and install the full feature driver to get the most scanning benefits. Download the basic driver if you want a smaller file size without additional advanced features, such as Optical Character Recognition (OCR).

Open the downloaded driver, and then follow the instructions to install the software and connect your printer.

Enable Scan to Computer

  • Enable Scan to Computer on your Windows computer to enable scanning to your computer from the printer control panel.
  • Make sure your printer is connected to the same network as your device.
  • On your computer, open HP Scan Assistant.
  • Select your printer, and then click OK.
  • In the new window, click Manage Scan to Computer.

Click Manage Scan to Computer

  • Click Enable.

Scan to computer is enabled

Change the default scan settings in Windows (Optional)

  • Change the default control panel scan settings in Windows with HP Scan.
  • On your computer, open HP Scan, and then choose the Scan Shortcut you want to change, such as Scan as PDF or Scan as JPEG.

Scan shortcuts in HP Scan

  • Change the desired scan settings, and then click the Save icon .

Scan to a Windows computer from the control panel

  • Scan directly from the control panel to a Windows computer.
  • Place the original on the scanner glass or into the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF).

Selecting the computer from the printer control panel

  • Choose Scan as PDF or Save as JPEG, and then touch Send.

Hope this helps, Please revert if the issue persists. https://support.hp.com/id-en/document/ish_7279439-7279483-16 follow the link for detailed steps.

Hi @Pallipurath

Thank you for your suggestions. These are essentially the step that I tried, but I have followed them again to confirm.

Note that in addition, I also used HP Scan Assistant to load my modified / newly created profiles to the printer.

If I initiate the scan from a Windows PC, it will scan one side of each page, then prompt me to reinsert the document to scan the second side. This works fine.

If I initiate the scan from the printers control panel, using the ADF, it will scan one side of the paper, send the data to the chosen Windows PC, then end with a message saying scan completed. If I reinsert the paper to scan the other side, it creates a completely new document.

If I scan by placing the original on the scanner glass, then after each page it prompts me to scan the next. At this stage it doesn't know whether it is scanning the second side, or simply another sheet of paper, so simply prompts for the next page, if there is one.

It would appear that the printer console lacks the ability to prompt the user to reinsert the stack of pages into the ADF for scanning the second side, so assumes it is single sided. This process only works correctly when the scan is initiated from the Windows PC.

As an additional test, I have used HP Scan on the Windows PC to change the Color Mode setting from Color to Black/White. When I perform the scan from the printer console this results in a black and white scan. This confirms that the settings are being successfully transferred to the printer, but the Duplex setting is not being applied.

To me, these test results suggest this is simply a shortcoming in the printer/scanner capabilities. If you feel this could be a defect in the latest firmware release, perhaps you could raise the issue.

Many thanks for your help.

Hi @Glenn_146

Thank you for responding.

I understand when the scan is initiated from the Windows PC using HP Scan, the software correctly prompts you to reinsert the pages to scan the second side, and the duplex scan is completed successfully.

When the scan is initiated from the printer's control panel, the printer scans only the first side of the pages and completes the job without prompting for the second side, even though the duplex scan profile has been transferred to the printer. Your test with the Color Mode setting confirms that the scan profile is being synchronized with the printer, but the Duplex option is not being working when the scan is started from the printer itself.

Update from the Printer Control Panel

  • Turn on the printer and ensure it is connected to the internet.
  • On the printer's touchscreen, tap Menu or Setup (gear icon).
  • Select Printer Maintenance or Tools.
  • Tap Update the Printer or Printer Update.
  • Select Check for Updates.
  • If an update is available, choose Install.
  • Wait for the update to complete. Do not turn off the printer during the update.
  • The printer will restart automatically.

Restore the Printer to Factory Defaults

  • On the printer control panel, tap Setup (gear icon).
  • Select Printer Maintenance or Tools.
  • Choose Restore or Restore Factory Defaults.
  • Confirm when prompted.
  • Wait for the printer to restart.
  • Reconnect the printer to our Wi-Fi network.
  • Re-add the printer in HP App or Windows if necessary.

Update the Printer Firmware

Updating the firmware ensures the printer has the latest fixes and feature improvements. https://support.hp.com/in-en/drivers

Test Using HP APP

This checks whether the behavior is specific to HP Scan Assistant.

  • Open the HP App. https://www.hp.com/us-en/hp-app/overview.html
  • Select your printer.
  • Click Scan.
  • Select Scan Settings or Create/Edit Scan Shortcut.
  • Create a new scan profile using:
  • Source: ADF
  • PDF format
  • Manual Duplex enabled
  • Save the shortcut.
  • Sync the shortcut to the printer.
  • Start a scan from the printer's control panel and observe whether it prompts for scanning the second side.

Have a good day.

The printer is new (less than 2 weeks old) and has had its firmware updated. Auto updates are enabled, so no further updates are available. The process of factory reset etc has already been tried, without success.

It would appear that this is a limitation of the printer that simply does not have the firmware required to perform duplex scanning from the control panel. If you believe that this is not the case, and that the printer should be able to perform this basic function, then please let me know.

Unfortunately, the printer has just broken. It completely fails to switch on, so I have requested a return for replacement. Hopefully the replacement will at least work, even if not perform basic duplex scanning from the control panel.

Hi @Glenn_146

Thank you for responding.

I understand that the printer is less than two weeks old. However, since the troubleshooting steps performed so far have not resolved the issue, could you please let me know if you see any error message when you try to print duplex printing? Also, please confirm where the printer was purchased.

Have a good day.
