Note: From May 1, 2024, the HP Scan and Capture app will no longer be available (retired) in the Microsoft Store and HP will not release any further app updates. Alternatively, you can download HP Smart from the Microsoft Store. For more information on how to set up your printer using the HP Smart app, go to HP printer setup (HP Smart app).

HP ENVY 360
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Up until recently, this printer/scanner/copier has worked fine.  I mostly use it for scanning documents, etc. and all of a sudden the scanner doesn't work.  From HP Smart when I click the SCAN button I get the error message below.  I've tried all of the tips and tricks (removing the printer and Smart app, reloading them, updating drivers, etc.)  Any ideas?

Hi @ToddRod

Welcome to HP Support Community!

We noticed that this thread hasn't had any updates in a while since your original post; while this is rare, we didn't want this post to remain unanswered, so, here's the solution to your query. We hope it helps you and everyone viewing this post 😊

The “Couldn’t Connect to Scanner” message in HP Smart for your HP ENVY Pro 6455 All-in-One on Windows 10—especially after it worked fine previously—points to either a recent Windows update, a scanner service failure, or deeper USB/Wi-Fi communication issues.

Here’s a comprehensive set of steps to resolve this:

Confirm the Scanner Works via Windows Fax and Scan

  • Type Windows Fax and Scan in the Start menu.

  • Click New Scan.

  • If this works, the issue is with the HP Smart app, not the scanner itself.

Restart the Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) Service

  1. Press Win + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.

  2. Locate Windows Image Acquisition (WIA).

  3. Right-click and choose Restart.

  4. Make sure Startup type is set to Automatic.

Use HP Print and Scan Doctor

  1. Download and run: HP Print and Scan Doctor.

  2. Let it diagnose and fix scanner-related issues automatically.

Check Connection Type

  • If connected via Wi-Fi:

    • Ensure the printer and PC are on the same network band (e.g., both on 2.4 GHz).

    • Restart your router, printer, and PC.

  • If connected via USB:

    • Use a different USB cable and port.

    • Avoid using USB hubs.

Fully Remove and Reinstall Printer + HP Software

  1. Go to Devices and Printers, remove the printer.

  2. Uninstall HP Smart and any HP software via Control Panel.

  3. Press Win + R > type printui.exe /s > enter the Drivers tab, and remove any leftover HP entries.

  4. Restart the PC.

  5. Reinstall HP Smart from the Microsoft Store.

  6. Re-add your printer and test.

Update or Roll Back Windows/HP Drivers

  • Go to Device Manager > Imaging devices or Printers.

  • Right-click on your printer/scanner, click Update driver or Roll back if recently updated.

  • Also check Windows Update > Optional Updates > see if HP drivers are listed.

Please mark this post as “Accepted Solution” if the issue is resolved, and if you feel this reply was helpful, click “Yes”.
