Mac OS X 10.9 Mavericks

Hi. I’m having sudden problems scanning. Never had an issue in two years with my HP ENVY 4520. Running (yes, I know it’s old!) Mac OS 10.9.5 Mavericks for a number of reasons. Was scanning a lot of photos for restoration purposes the past couple weeks and yesterday, out of the blue began to have trouble with my scans. I looked to see if there had been a driver update at HP. Seemed there was a new driver for my printer. Downloaded and installed. That made my issues much worse. Gut instinct — the driver I updated is probably too new for my old OS.

 

Wrestled with the printer/scanner software all day. Uninstalled/reinstalled about 5-6 times. Reset printer. Restarted everything: computer, printer, router. Read all the trouble shooting I could and followed all the advice I found. I’m still stuck. I can print so I’m certain the computer is communicating with the printer. But no scanning ability. Every time I launch Easy Scan, it immediately crashes. I have no idea how to fix this issue. 

I need to scan — especially right now — because I’m finalizing my taxes. Accountant needs a few more documents sent over. But I cannot scan anything. Easy Scan hates me.

Are you able to copy documents?

Are you initiating a scan using the HP easy Scan application or from the printer control panel display?

 

Meanwhile, Update the printer firmware

Download available firmware updates from the HP website

With the printer on and connected to the computer, go to HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads, and then identify your printer. Look for and install any available firmware updates. Refer to the document HP Printers - Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware

 

Removing the existing Scanner Application and then installing HP Easy Scan may resolve the issue. Let's try these steps:

 

1.) Open Finder, click Applications.

2.) Delete the existing HP scanner applications by moving it to trash.

3.) Download and install HP Easy Scan from here
