Common problems HP Solution Center not working : Adobe Flash Player Error and Unable to scan
We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about HP Solution Center not working : Adobe Flash Player Error and Unable to Scan.

HP OfficeJet 3830 All-in-One
Mac OS X 10.9 Mavericks

I just purchased the HP Officejet 3830 All-in-One for my Mac, which is running OS 10.9.2. I went through the wireless set-up successfully. The printer prints fine. But the Easy Scan app quits on start-up with the error message that it "quit unexpectedly." I am aware this same issue has been pointed out in another thread, but that user is running OS10.10 or 10.11 (I forget which).

Some details:

* I am glass ceilinged at 10.9.2 and cannot install a higher OS without losing the ability to use apps that are vital to my work. I bought the printer based on its box indicating it was compatible with OS 10.9.

* I do have the HP Scan app and other software installed for my previous printer, OfficeJet 5740. I am aware that uninstalling/deleting this is a possible workaround, but I noted that this did not work for the user, and so I am hesitant to uninstall that software because the reason why I bought a new printer is because the 5740, according to HP Support, is no longer supported and it no longer prints black - but it scans fine. I don't want to run the risk of uninstalling 5740, finding out I still can't scan with the 3830, and permanently losing a function that is also vital to my work. If necessary I'll find a place to plug in the 5740 and keep it going for the scan function alone, but this is not ideal.

* If EasyScan will not run because of the 5740 application, is it possible to adjust the 5740 application to read the 3830?

* Is there an alternate app option for the purposes of scanning?

Thanks for your help!

Hi,

This could be possibly a driver conflict.

Have you followed HP Easy Start to make sure that HP Easy Scan and your HP Essential Software are both up to date?

http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software12/HP_Quick_Start/osx/Applications/HP_Easy_Start.app.zip

If that doesn't help, also try giving Image Capture a try:

  1. Place the document or photo print side down on the scanner glass, and then close the scanner lid.
If your printer has an automatic document feeder (ADF), use it to scan multiple page documents at one time.
      caution:
Do not load photos in the ADF.
  2. Open Finder

, and then click Go in the top menu bar.
  3. Click Applications, and then double-click Image Capture.
  4. Click your printer name in the Devices or Shared list.
    note:
If a Software for this device is not installed message displays after you select your printer, click Install, and then follow the instructions to complete the installation.
  5. Click Show Details at the bottom of the screen.
A preview of the scan displays, and then change any of the following settings:
    • Scan Mode: Select the scanning bed or automatic document feeder.
    • Kind: Set scan as color, black and white, or optimized for text only documents.
    • Resolution: Higher resolution produces better quality images by using more dots (pixels) per inch. Higher resolution increases the file size of the scan. Use a higher resolution for scans with graphics or items that require the best detail. If you are scanning black and white text, higher resolution is not necessary.
    • Size: Use a standard paper size or select the Use Custom Size option.
    • Scan to: Select the folder you want scans to save to or use the Mail option to attach the scan to an Apple Mail email message.
    • Name: Type a name for the saved scan file.
    • Format: Select the file type for the scan.
      note:
To save multiple page documents or multiple images into a single file, select the PDF or TIFF format, and then select the box next to Combine into single document. This feature is only available with these formats.
    • Image Correction: Click the pop-up menu, and then select Manual to display color change options such as brightness and saturation.
  6. Click Scan.

Thanks for the fast reply. I ran Easy App when I was setting up my printer and the version of the drivers, etc. file was dated something like Nov. 19 so I'd say that's the most current. I followed your directions re: Image Capture and I wasn't aware I had such an app already installed. I was able to scan, no problems, though I have to change the settings each time I launch, which is annoying (it doesn't want to save my preferences). Plus, while I can rotate images, it's not as easy as on HP Scan. However, as an immediate solution, it did the trick, so I'll mark this as "accepted solution". Thanks again!

I'd like to add a bit of information for the benefit of anyone reading this who is in a similar situation. I noted in my reply above that while Image Capture allows me to scan in lieu of Easy Scan, its ability to crop/rotate-straighten images leaves a bit to be desired. I just remembered that HP Scan (the app that came with my 5740 and which may be interfering with Easy Scan) can open images from other sources, not just its own scans - so its more precise crop and rotate/straighten-image options can be used on scans made through Image Capture.
