My old Mac Mini died so I replaced it with a new one which uses Apple's M1 chip and architecture, running Big Sur OS. I can get the 8600 Plus and 551dw machines to print, but cannot get Scan to Computer to work on the 8600. (The 551 does not have the scanner module.) I know that requires Enabling at the computer end (have had to do it many times over the years, and it actually comes up on startup with my Windows 10 box) but I can't find the button anywhere on the Mac. I regularly need to use the document feeder and scan double sided, so even if I could get HP Scan to work (when I try it, it just sits there Preparing for minutes on end, until I turn it off) it only seems to scan single pages from the glass.
I tried resetting (removed all printers from the system) but Easy Start never got past the spinning wheel at the beginning. So the printers are working after just being found and installed by the Apple system, but I can't find the enable scan button.
Anybody else have a solution for this?

The 8600 supports direct scan to folder and is likely your best option, no software needs to be installed to do this, you just need a shared network folder. Check the users guide Chapter 4 http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c03026243.pdf
