Hello @Richdpet – Hope you are well 🙂

Welcome to the HP Support Forums!  It is a great place to find the help you need, from other users, HP experts, and other support personnel.

It looks like a scanner issue with tour Envy printer. I would suggest you perform a hard reset with the printer. Follow the steps below:

  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • Remove USB cable, if present.
  • Wait for 2-3 minutes, press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.
  • Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord and then plug back the power cord to the printer.
  • Turn on the printer and wait till warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle.
  • Now try making a copy on the printer and check.

If the issue persists, then it would be better to contact HP phone support to create a printer service. You can visit http://www.support.hp.com/contact-hp and fill in your product details to get the tech support number.

If you have any troubles, let me know and I will do my best to help.

Thanks & have a great day 🙂

After the hard boot of the printer things seem to work fine. I had unplugged and restarted several times but did not allow the time for electric drain which seemed to be the key to the whole process.

Thank you very much, saved me buying a new printer.

@Phan1936,

Welcome to HP Forums, this is a great place to get support, find answers and tips.

Thank you for posting your query, I'll be more than glad to help you.

I understand that you are facing issues with scanning from your HP ENVY 7640 e-All-in-One Printer wherein you get an error "Turn the printer off and then on again ".

This issue could occur if the printer is in error state or it could be a hardware issue with the scanner mechanism.

Let's go through a few steps to resolve this issue.

1.Turn the printer on, if it is not already on.
2.Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
3.With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
4.Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
5.Wait at least 60 seconds.
6.Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
NOTE: HP recommends connecting the printer power cord directly to the wall outlet.
7.Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
8.Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on. The printer might go through a warm-up period. The printer lights might flash, and the carriage might move.
9.Wait until the warm-up period finishes and your printer is idle and silent before you proceed.

I tried the hard reset many times and didn't work but finally tried this after reading someone else did it...  You have to hold down the power button for 30 seconds while unpluged from computer and unpluged from wall.  Turn on Printer and wait till it cycles and copy works!!!  After 5 hrs I have a printer that works.   MAKE SURE YOU HOLD DOWN THE POWER BUTTON FOR 30 SECONDS WHEN UPLUGED....  tHIS IS THE RESOLUTION!!
