Envy 5540 scanning with lid open only B&W

I have an Envy 5540 running on both a windows 10 machine and a Mac OSX 10.14 laptop. I am trying to scan with the lid open and it is only scanning in Black and White. the scanner works perfectly with the lid closed. I need to get a colour scan with the lid open. Is this possible?

Welcome to the HP Forums 🙂 I would like to take a moment and thank you for using this forum, it is a great place to find answers. 

Scanners need lids to block ambient light sources. Whenever you have the lid open while scanning that cold cathode tube picks up any stray light source and can be harmful to your scan. 

Your Printer has an Automatic Document Feeder,  which you could use for scanning.

Happy Christmas and Thank you for your reply. I am trying to scan a page from a thick book and the lid will not close when the book is on the scan plate. The scans all come out as black and white but colour when the kid is closed. This means it is a software switch. How do I over ride this setting so the scanner scans in colour with the lid open?

You can try scanning with a higher image resolution, probably 600 dpi.

Double-click on the Printer Assistant on your Computer, select Scan a Document or Photo.

Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately I have already gone up to 1200 dpi. Once the lid is open the scanner only scans in black and white. The scanner works perfectly with the lid closed and even the scans I can make with the lid open are of good quality it is just that they are black and white. 

Do you have someone who is familiar with the envy 5540 in particular that you might consult pls?
