When I try and scan it shows as scanning on screen of the printer but stays like that - nothing happens. How do I get it to work?

Hi @Kingy1,
Thanks for reaching out to the HP support forums for a solution to your printer issue.
I understand that you are using an HP ENVY 5542 e-All-in-One Printer with a Windows 10 computer but when you try to scan the printer shows 'scanning' on the printer display, but nothing happens. I would like to help with that.
Is there any error message that is seen after the printer finally resides that the scan is not going to be done?
Are you connecting with a USB cable or over a wireless network?
I would start by performing a Power Reset on the printer just to clear it from an error state, just in case it is in one.
Next, i would download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor. This tool can diagnose and fix many printing and scanning issues.
Please let me know how the HP Print and Scan Doctor goes, or if you require further assistance.
