HP Envy Photo 6234
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have a new HP Envy Photo 6234. Printing works fine but any attempt to use the scanner causes the printer to have a melt down.

If I initiate scanning either from my PC (Windows Fax and Scan or HP ENVY Photo 6200 series-HP Scan) or from the printer (Copy or Scan buttons), the printer thinks about it briefly then flashed all of the front panel icons (the home and back icons, then the help and power icons) on and off indefinitely. The scanner does not work and the printer becomes unresponsive. If I subsequently power off the printer (holding down the power button seems to work, or unplugging it) and turning it back on, I'm then able to scan or copy. If I come back later, say after an hour, the same problem re-occurs and I cannot scan or copy until I recycle the power.

Faulty hardware? The printer is new and well within warranty. It doesn't sound like a software or firmware issue.

Hi,

Thanks for using the HP Support Community.

Can check if there are new Firmware and update the printer?

This  resource (example) shows how to do that:

Why updating printer firmware is important? (on Color Graphics Display)

If after updating the Firmaware, the issue still persist, please contact HP for support:

Hi!

Thank you for the reply. The printer is on firmware version MINPPXN003.1845A.00. I followed the guide in the video and the printer has detected a firmare update - it's downloading and installing it now. I'll re-test the behaviour once this has been applied and update the ticket. Fingers crossed!

Hi!

After the firmware update, it's still not working. When I initatiated a scan this morning, the printer completely crashed, flashing lights and a corrupted from panel screen:

I'll take your advice and raise a support ticket - the printer is clearly faulty.

Thanks!

I am having exactly the same issue with my two month old Envy 6234 printer, initiating a scan after a period of time results in the printer locking up with lights and screen flashing necesitating a long press on the power button to restart the printer. Have run scan and print doctor which did some updates but problem persists.

I raised a support ticket, went through some basic diagnostics and ended up getting a replacement printer sent out. It wasn't the extract same model (6232, where I had a 6234) but identical, to all intents and purposes, and works without the irritating crash / flash error.

My ticket number was [edited], if you want to point them at my (very) similar case.

They're insisting it's a wifi/router related problem which I am sure it isn't. More like a wake to scan issue. I'll persevere!

Hahaha! Wifi indeed!

I ended up speaking to an amazing tech support girl who knew her technology inside out. She was very quick to diagnose the faulty printer.

I don't see how it can be anything else, other than dodgy firmware, that would cause the machine to break down like that, with flashing lights and a corrupt LCD.

Persevere, and I hope you get a prompt resolution!

I agree and think this proves it. Strange they never suggested the event log, delved into it myself and found the errors when it happens.  We'll see what they say now!

My issue appears to have been resolved by performing a semi-full reset from a hidden support menu entered by pressing home - back -  home -  home symbols then scrolling to resets menu. Fingers crossed!
