HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-All-in-One Printer - N911g
Microsoft Windows 11

I keep getting an error when trying to setup and test "Scan to Network Folder"

Error message is:

"Error. Your printer cannot connect the server, Press "Back" to correct server name and address.  Make sure that Network Discovery and File Sharing are turned on.  These settings can be found in the network and sharing settings of the Windows Control Panel on your computer."

I am running Windows 11 and printer is:  HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus

Network Discovery and Sharing is all enabled.  Scanned Folder is set up for sharing on Network.  I have corrected issues where I can now scan to computer after disconnecting power and turning back on but still have problems with setting up "Scanning to Network Folder"

Is it a Windows 11 issue with HP Printers perhaps?  Has anyone else had this issue with this type of printer?

UPDATE: 03/15/22:  I have had HP Support and Dell Support each spend 1.5 hours attempting to resolve this issue with no success.  They cannot figure out why the network folder cannot be accessed as per the HP Scan wizard error message.  I tried to set the "Scan to Folder" up on a Windows 10 OS, and get the same error.  I am now suspecting its an HP problem and not an OS or computer issue.

I would like to hear from anyone in the community that has an HP Officejet printer which is running either Windows 10 or 11 and has been successful in setting up the "Scan to Network Folder" functionality on their HP printer.

Would appreciate a response from HP Support on this issue.  Thanks.

Thank you for posting on the HP Support Community.

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help,

I appreciate your efforts to try and resolve the issue. There are many possible reasons for such a connection to fail, such as user authentication, a connectivity problem.

  • Are you connected wirelessly? Or with an Ethernet cable?

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

I hope, with your help, we can get this resolved.  So lets continue the conversation!  I am currently connected to the printer "wirelessly".  I have also tried connecting to the printer through hard-wired ethernet to see if that would resolve the problem - but I get the same error message.  HP Scan Doctor I have run and since updating drivers, its passes 100% and I can do a test scan initiated from computer and it all works.  So, from this tool's perspective, all looks good.  Dell support could not find any issues with computer on why this is failing.  Previous HP phone support person could not resolve the issue - they pointed me to call Dell support.   I would love to hear from others in the community if they are having this "Scan to Network Folder" issue as well with the officejet 8600 printer model.

Hi, I'm having the same problem but with the officejet 9015e and Windows 10. I receive a message on setting up Scan to Network Folder within HP Smart: "The printer is unable to connect to the remote destination. Check your configurations and try again."  As an HP+ customer, I called customer support and they tried very hard to fix the problem but with no success. They told me I had to use a local account to login rather than a Microsoft account. Same problem. The MyScans folder is shared and the permissions allow for read and write. The function used to work and now does not work at all. Any suggestions would be welcome.

Thank you for posting back.

Let's try these steps to resolve the issue:

Root level uninstall and reinstall printer drivers:

  • Go to Control panel – Programs and feature – Select all the HP Officejet printer entries and uninstall them.
  • Now go to Control panel – Devices and printer – Select all the printer entries and remove the device.
  • Then press the "windows key" + "r" to get the "Run" window open - Type "printui.exe /s" and press enter.
  • Under print server properties, go to drivers - remove any entry there as well.
  • Again, go to run window, type – “c:/programdata” – Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.

Just wanted to give you more data on this problem.  I tried to scan to print on my Windows 8.1 computer which had no issues previously with this functionality.  Now that the system indicated I must update my driver which I installed the driver available on Dec 2, 2021.  Now I have the exact same error message as I have on my Windows 10 and Windows 11 laptops.  So, obvious to me that this Driver package released on December 2, 2021 is the issue.  Meaning now on by Windows 8.1, 10, & 11 all can not use the HP scan to folder functionality.

What I would like HP to do is test this functionality themselves against my printer model - HP Officejet 8600 Pro, using the released driver package of December 2, 2021.   You should be able to reproduce the problem showing its a problem with this release of Drivers from December 2, 2021.  I will wait for you to test first before spending even more of my time with deleting all drivers and re-installing as I don't believe this will solve the problem as on my Windows 11 laptop, it was a brand new laptop and so first install of the HP driver package from December 2, 2021.  Which tell me HP has introduced this problem with this release of drivers and they need to fix the issue and release a new driver package which resolves this "scan to folder" issue.  I am speaking for thousands of HP Officejet (and potentially other models) now that have the same problem that I have where I can no longer "scan to folder" due to a problem HP has introduced in the latest driver package released on December 2, 2021.  Echo-Lake - if not already done so, please escalate this problem to senior HP management to investigate this issue, reproduce the issue, and then provide a fix.  Thank-you.

Echo-Lake thanks for the steps on how to remove  to old drivers and install fresh.  I followed the steps you provided with hopes it would resolve the "scan to folder" issue.  Unfortunately, it did not.  I still get the same error of "can't connect to server" as prior reported.  I  really do think its a problem with the latest driver package as it use to work on my Windows 8.1 computer before upgrading to this latest HP Driver package.  I also replied to your private message.  Has HP tried to reproduce the problem, I, and likely thousands of HP Officejet printer owners, are having with "scan to folder"?  Thanks.
