My HP Laserjet 1018 does not want to install. I've been going through the community chats regarding this and tried everything. Now, I want to completely uninstall it to begin from scratch, but I'm receiving the following error message: "Setup Encounted an abnormal program execution. setup will shut down." Please help.

Thank you.

Hi @ChrissiG,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If you're encountering an error message like "Setup encountered an abnormal program execution" while trying to uninstall the HP LaserJet 1018 printer software, it can be frustrating, but there are several steps you can take to resolve this issue. Here's a step-by-step guide.

Note: Before proceeding, make sure you have administrative privileges on your computer.

Restart Your Computer: Sometimes, simply restarting your computer can resolve issues with uninstallation. Restart your computer and try uninstalling the software again.

Use the Windows Uninstaller:

  • Press Win + X and select "Apps and Features" (Windows 10/11) or go to "Control Panel" > "Programs and Features" (Windows 7).
  • Find the HP LaserJet 1018 software in the list of installed programs.
  • Click on it and select "Uninstall" or "Change/Uninstall."

Use HP's Uninstaller Tool (if available): HP often provides a specialized uninstaller tool to remove their printer software completely. Check the HP website or the installation CD that came with your printer for an uninstaller utility. Download and run it.

Reinstall and Then Uninstall: This might seem counterintuitive, but sometimes reinstalling the software before uninstalling it can help. Here's how to do it:

  • Download the latest HP LaserJet 1018 driver and software package from the HP website.
  • Install the software package.
  • Once it's installed, try to uninstall it again using the methods mentioned in step 2.

Use a Third-Party Uninstaller: Sometimes, third-party uninstaller software can remove stubborn programs more effectively than the built-in Windows uninstaller. Tools like Revo Uninstaller or IObit Uninstaller can help you remove software and clean up leftover files and registry entries.

Manual Uninstallation (Advanced): If none of the above methods work, you can try manually uninstalling the software. This involves deleting files and registry entries related to the HP LaserJet 1018. Be extremely cautious when editing the Windows Registry, as incorrect changes can cause system instability. Here's a general outline of the steps:

  • Backup your registry: Before making any changes, it's essential to create a backup of your registry. To do this, open the Registry Editor by pressing Win + R, typing regedit, and pressing Enter. Then, go to File > Export and save a backup of your registry to a safe location.
  • Uninstall the program: Try to uninstall the program using the Windows uninstaller as mentioned in step 2.
  • Remove remaining files: Manually delete any remaining program files and folders related to HP LaserJet 1018 from your computer.
  • Clean the registry: Remove registry entries related to HP LaserJet 1018. Be very careful not to delete entries unrelated to the printer software.

Remember to restart your computer after completing any of these steps to ensure that all changes take effect.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
