@NUMBER1,

Welcome to the HP Forums 🙂 I would like to take a moment and thank you for using this forum, it is a great place to find answers. For you to have the best experience on the HP forum, you could also visit our HP Forums Guide for First Time Here? Learn How to Post and More.

I understand that the fax test is failed,

This says there is a problem with the fax line.

Do you have a shared line or dedicated fax line?

Let's check the fax setup.

Prepare your HP printer for faxing. These steps use a traditional landline telephone service. If you use a different type of phone service (cellular, Internet phone, PBX, or DSL), see the FAQs in this document to set up the connection.

  1. Obtain a telephone cord. Use the cord that came with the printer. If you do not have the original cord, use a cord with connectors that have two wire leads, not four.

Figure: Example of a two-wire connector

  2. Connect the phone cord to the phone wall jack and to the 1-LINE jack on the back of the printer.

Figure : Connect the 1-LINE phone connection

    Connect the 1-LINE phone connection
  3. If you have an answering machine, connect a phone cord to the machine and to the 2-EXT jack on the rear of the printer. Doing so allows your telephone answering machine to record voice calls normally without fully recording the noises from faxes.

    1. Wall jack

    2. Two-wire phone cord

    3. Answering machine (If you don't have an answering machine connect the phone to 2-EXT)

    4. Single-line telephone

  4. Set up fax preferences from the printer control panel menu.

    • Dial type: Match the type of analog phone service you have; tone or pulse. If the dial type does not match, the printer cannot detect rings and answer incoming calls.

The tone dial type is the current industry standard and can be found in most areas. You might have pulse dialing if you use a rotary telephone. If you are not sure of the dial type, contact your phone service provider.

    • Answer mode/Auto answer: Picks up your phone calls after a specified number of rings and accepts incoming faxes. If this feature is off, a person must manually accept incoming faxes from the printer control panel.

    • Rings to answer: When the phone rings, the printer waits and counts the number of telephone rings before it answers the call.

      • If the phone line is shared with your voice calls, choose a number rings that provides enough time for you to answer the phone before the printer picks up a call.

      • If the phone line is shared with an answering machine, choose a number to pick up that is two rings more than the answering machine. Doing so ensures the answering machine answers the phone before the printer.

    • Fax volume: Select a volume level to hear sounds made during the fax call, such as dial tones and busy signals. Do not set the fax volume to Off unless you want silent faxing and are able to send and receive faxes regularly.

    • Fax header: Enter the text you want recipients to see at the top of your faxes. A typical fax header contains your name, the name of your business, and your fax telephone number (recommended).

Then, print a fax test page.

The Fax Test Report lists the status of the fax function and steps to troubleshoot the function in case of a fax test failure.

  1. Load plain white paper in the input tray.

  2. On the control panel, touch Fax.

  3. Touch Setup, touch Tools and then touch Run Fax Test.

    A Fax Test Report prints.

Check everything passes on the test page.

Let's try to Disable ECM and also try reducing fax and check if it works.

To change the ECM setting from the control panel

1. From the printer control panel display, touch Fax.

2. Touch Setup.

3. Touch Preferences.

4. Scroll to Error Correction Mode to touch to turn the feature on or off.

Good luck and keep me posted about the developments. If this helps, please mark this as “Accepted Solution” as it will help several others with the same issue and give the post a Kudos for my efforts to help. Thank you and have a great week ahead. 🙂

I am sharing this line with my anwering machine.

This printer did not come with a phone cord but the one I am using is 2 wire. I have tried other cords.  Note this cord was working with the previous Epson printer.  Line (1) in is direct from my T-Mobile LineLink (Ethernet).

I turned ECM off but I don't see any place to print the FAX test page. I set the speed to slow (9600)

I downloaded the latest frimrware from HP but it doesn't seem to help.

I hear the dial tone when the FAX test is running but then I hear a fast busy signal.

VOIP FAQ suggested turning on ECM so I tried that and successfully FAXED at 9600 to FAX Toy (1-855-330-1239). Still can't pass HP FAX test. I hear the dial tone a couple of times & then a couple of pulses before the line goes busy.

I was able to FAX to the HP site (1-888-473-2963) and received a FacBack. The 2nd time I tried to FAX them I was unsuccessful with error 344

@NUMBER1,

It's great to have you back and your patience is greatly appreciated.

After reviewing your post thoroughly, I would suggest you retry the fax reception when telephone line conditions have improved. Call the telephone provider if line conditions fail to improve.

Let me know if this helps!

Have a great day ahead! 🙂
