Using an HP Envy 4500 with a MacBook Air linked by wifi. Mac has latest version OS is Catalina 10.15.7 installed.
Printing is not a problem. When I try to scan, however, this message appears: "Failed to open a connection to the device (-21345)". I have scanned before with this printer, so this is a recent problem. I don't know what the code means, and I know I have a connection because I can print documents. I have tried using HP Easy Scan also, but get the same error.

I reviewed your post and I understand that you are unable to scan and getting an error.
Don’t worry, I assure you I will try my best to get this sorted.
Do you turn on the printer before starting the scan?
Meanwhile, I recommend you update the printer firmware following the steps in the below article and check if it helps.
