Recently we switched over from Comcast to AT&T. The tech that came out, was having issues with our fax machine. We tested out calling, and the fax did not ring. We tried different things until we had to close for the day. A month or so goes by and we need to fax something out. Still not working. We call AT&T and they have a technician come out. Turns out the original guy plugged the wire into the wrong port. Fix that, the machine starts ringing again. Great!
Well, we try to fax something else (did the previous fax at a FedEx store). It starts to process it. Scans the item. Working through. Then it prints out a paper. Turns out that it failed to go through. Saying that it was unable to connect to the other fax. We know for sure that the other fax is up and running. I run a diagnostic on it, where it says everything is hooked up. Yet it prints out a report saying that the fax detects an active telephone line. But then it says "The phone cord is connected to the correct port. FAIL". There are only two ports. The other port didn't even work with our system. We hooked it up to the one with the telephone symbol and it works just fine.
We figured we would turn to the forums, due to HP wanting to charge us for help. (Warranty went out in 2019). Thank you!

The two ports will have different symbols on them. One will look like a wall jack and that is where the line from the wall goes to. The other port has either a handset or picture of a phone. This is where you plug in an extension phone. Most problems we see with phone lines and internet providers is the provider failing to configure properly the lines at their office, but blame everything else. Find a phone, plug it in and try to make and receive a voice call. If that works then you may need to play with the settings on your fax machine such as turning off error correction or selecting a slower transmission speed.

Hi!
So ,we tried that. No such luck. The printer said it could not connect. It is a fairly new printer but has had its ups and downs. We continue to get random calls to it. It rings and tries to connect. Then prints out a paper saying that there was no message. The technician from the provider had messed with the wiring to and from the phone, printer, modem, etc. We were already having issues. Would there be another step to take to see if it would work? Or would it most likely be a wiring issue?
