Hello,

I haven't been able to use the fax machine for quite some time now. I get the error message “An error has occurred.”

What could be the cause of this? Please fix the error.

My serial number is: [edited].

Kind regards,

@VioletaYord, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

When encountering the error message "An error has occurred" while trying to use the fax function on your HP DeskJet 2721e All-in-One Printer, here's a checklist and some troubleshooting steps to help resolve the issue:

Check Phone Cord and Connection:

  • Ensure that you are using the phone cord that was supplied with the fax accessory. Substituting another phone cord might cause issues.
  • Verify that the phone cord is properly seated in the socket on the fax accessory, with the connector inserted until it "clicks."
  • Attach a regular phone to the wall jack to check if there's a dial tone, ensuring the phone line is operational.

Appropriate Phone Line:

  • Make sure you are using a standard analog phone line for faxing. Some PBX business systems are digital and may not be compatible with analog fax accessories.

Surge Protection Devices:

  • If you are using a surge-protection device between the wall jack and the fax accessory, try connecting the fax accessory directly to the wall jack as these devices can degrade phone signal quality, causing communication problems.

Voice-Messaging Service or Answering Machine:

  • Confirm that the rings-to-answer setting for the fax accessory is lower than for any messaging services to ensure the fax can pick up calls before the phone service does.

Call-Waiting Feature:

  • Deactivate the call-waiting feature on the fax telephone line as it can interrupt a fax call in progress, causing communication errors.

Check Fax Accessory Status:

  • Print a Configuration Page report to verify the status of the fax accessory and ensure there is no operational issue.

I hope this helps.
