I have a HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 and I've tried to hook up the faxing capabilities. After running a fax test the dial tone test failed as well as the fax line condition test. that also failed. Everything else passed. Please advise on what to do to fix this issue.

Connect the printer / fax to a viable phone line where you can get the dial tone.  Nothing else is going to work unless you can at least connect the printer to a usable phone line with a dial tone.

Fax has been around for so long that the subject has been covered in more detail than almost any other feature on the printer.

First, the connection has to be made in the right place on the printer (the correct port).

  • The phone cord should be a two-wire phone cord (and not the regular phone cords used to connect your phone to the wall jack).
  • The phone line has to be capable of connecting to the Fax.

For example

"Fax" data transfer is a bit fussier than using a phone line to speak to someone.  A phone line can be noisy (line interference), part way compromised (poor connection) and one can still call up someone on the phone and carry on a voice conversation.  Fax data is not so forgiving.  If the line is extra noisy (lots of line interference), Fax may may not work.   What to do?  If the problem is only in the local line at that wall outlet, try another phone line somewhere in your house.

NOTE:  The phone company, at least those in the Western USA, generally guarantee the (landline) phone lines will carry voice transmission.  Few, if any, of the companies care whether your voice phone line carries a Fax signal.  Fax data lines can (in most areas) can be installed - these are Not cheap.  Data lines meet much higher standards and the cost is passed to the customer.  That said, if the phone line to your house is bad enough, your local phone company might fix it.   If the phone lines under / in your house are bad, you might have to pay to have the line(s) fixed.  (Information based on only one region in the US.)

Where to look for help:

There are printer support website categories for Troubleshooting documents, Tests, How-to documents, and an expansive chapter explaining using / setting / fixing the Fax in the User Guide

The primary setup does involve the physical connection requirements.

Excerpted from the document

No dial tone: A wired analog phone line is required for faxing. If you do not hear a dial tone when you press Send Fax, disconnect and reconnect the phone cord from the wall outlet and the 1-Line port on the fax machine. Connect a regular phone to the phone line, pick up the receiver, and listen to see if the phone line has a dial tone. If the issue persists, try sending the fax through another wall jack and make sure you are using the phone cord that shipped with the fax machine.

Commentary

Assuming you can resolve the connection error (*dial tone*), you can use the Embedded Web Server (EWS) to check / view / configure your Fax.

Open your favorite browser > type / enter Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Tab Fax
