Note: From May 1, 2024, the HP Scan and Capture app will no longer be available (retired) in the Microsoft Store and HP will not release any further app updates. Alternatively, you can download HP Smart from the Microsoft Store. For more information on how to set up your printer using the HP Smart app, go to HP printer setup (HP Smart app).

HP LaserJet Pro M1536dnf Multifunction Printer

in the past I have always had no issues getting my scan feature to work with this printer.  However, ever since HP has made this new tool called “HP Smart” which is anything but!

as you can see from the attached screenshot I don’t have a little cloud. I have a green dot.  I can get the printer configuration on the local network. I can send jobs using air print.

so they are on the same local network but when I press the scan button, I get the dreaded “ feature unavailable” message that seems to indicate that my printer does not have this capability which, of course it does.

maybe if I reset the printer three times and remove the app from the running condition I might get it to work.  Although it’s not working and I’m trying to just scan some documents and it’s very annoying.  I know HP doesn’t really care about older product and they want me to just throw this in the trash and buy some new multifunction printer.

well I don’t wanna do that. It works just fine. It prints and black-and-white which for me is pretty much how I see the world…

anyone out there with any tips or anything?IMG_1697.jpeg

Welcome to the HP English Community --

HP Smart has always been the primary application offered by HP for most supported mobile devices.

Android might be an exception -- Android is its own animal.

From the look of the image, perhaps you are using an iPad, yes?

iOS / iPadOS - latest version.

The "unavailable" issue might be the result of the iPad -- at some point -- losing connection with the printer for a time and then not fully recovering.

I've seen it with my iPad Pro 12.9 on occasion and there is certainly naught wrong with my printers or my network.

Dragon Opinion

HP does not care whether you have old or new tech -

Sure, HP wants you to purchase and use their products.

I would think Enterprise printers of this type would generally expect a long service life.

Going down the rabbit hole "HP wants me to throw away my stuff" is a lonely journey.

If the printer is new enough to support the the software or apps you want to use, if your network is decent and supports the connections needed for printer and applications, then it's good enough.

When what you have is no longer good enough, does not work, is not supported, or if you get tired of it, then you can decide to update to something else.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

If you have not done so,

Try / Consider

  • Switch off the iPad (and / or other mobile device(s)).
  • Consider restarting at least the printer.
  • Better if you also restart the router on your network, too.
  • All done?  Switch on the iPad and check...

True -

If it all goes and stays sideways, you can choose to remove the app from the device and start over.

No, it's not a sign of doom.

Apps get tangled up sometimes and need to be reloaded.

At least, that's my experience.

General hints and information

Reminders

  • Both printer and phone must be on the same network (phone not on Data line)
  • iPad / iPhone:  Both Location Service and Bluetooth must be switched on during the initial connection process.
  • Check whether your iPhone / iPad / iOS version is supported.

Reminder

It is important that every device is using the latest version of the HP Smart app for that device type.

Check / Update >> Every device (computer(s) and mobile) where HP Smart is installed should be running the latest version of the HP Smart application available for that device platform (Operating System / Version).

AND

The printer and device (computer, tablet, phone) where HP Smart is running should be on the same network.
