HP 1040 Fax

I used to have a dedicated line for this fax. I'm trying to combine this fax to a line that already has an external answering machine. What settings should I have on the fax machine to do both on the same line?

Welcome to the HP Support Community. I'd be happy to assist you.

Are you able to send and receive faxes? To setup fax on a shared line:

1. Disconnect any devices that are connected to the telephone jack.

2. Remove the plug from the telephone line-out port on the rear of the printer.

3. Connect the telephone cable (that came with the printer) to the fax port on the printer, and then to the telephone jack on the wall.

   NOTE: 

   Some countries/regions might require an adapter for the telephone cable that came with the printer.

4. Connect the answering machine telephone cable to the telephone line-out port on the rear of the printer.

   NOTE: 

   If you do not connect the answering machine directly to the printer, the answering machine might record fax tones from a sending fax machine and the printer might not receive faxes. If the answering machine does not have a built-in telephone, connect a telephone to the OUT port on the answering machine for convenience.

5. Turn on the printer.

6. Configure the Rings to Answer setting on the printer:

   1. From the Home screen on the printer control panel, swipe the tab at the top of the screen downward to open the Dashboard, and then touch the Setup icon .

   2. Scroll to and touch Fax Setup, and then touch Preferences.

   3. Scroll to and touch Rings to answer, select the number of rings, and then touch Done to return to the Preferences menu.

7. Configure the printer to answer fax calls automatically:

   1. From the Preferences menu, touch the toggle next to Auto Answer to turn on the setting.
