Hi @Pat1H,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

While the HP Deskjet Plus 4100 doesn't support automatic detection and saving of multiple photos on the platen, you can still achieve this with some manual cropping. Here's how.

Software Needed:

  • Make sure you have the latest HP full-feature software installed for your Deskjet Plus 4100. You can download it from the HP website [HP Deskjet Plus 4100 Software and Drivers].

Scanning Process:

Place your photos: Arrange your photos on the printer's platen with some space between them. Ensure they are facing downwards.

Open HP Scan: Locate and open the HP Scan software on your computer.

Select Scan Settings: In the HP Scan software, choose the following settings:

  • Scan to: Select "File"
  • File Type: Choose your preferred format, typically JPEG for photos (JPG is also an option)
  • Item Type: Select "Photo"
  • Page Size: Choose "Detect Photos" (This helps with automatic photo boundary detection)

Scan and Crop:

  • Click "Scan."
  • A preview of the scanned photos will appear.
  • Use the cropping tool to select the area around the first photo you want to save.
  • Click "Add Page" or a similar option (might vary depending on software version).

Repeat Cropping and Saving: Repeat steps 4a and 4b to crop and add separate pages for each remaining photo.

Save Individual Files: Once you've cropped all photos, click "Save" and assign a unique name and location for each scanned photo.

Additional Tips:

  • Leave some space between photos on the platen for easier cropping.
  • You can adjust the scan resolution (DPI) based on your needs. Higher DPI creates larger file sizes but better quality.
  • If your HP Scan software version is above 20, the automatic cropping feature might not be available. You'll need to manually crop each photo as described above.

By following these steps, you can scan multiple photos on your HP Deskjet Plus 4100 and save them as individual files.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thanks for that.  I guess I didn't have the necessary software installed. I just had HP Smart.  Quite a messy procedure though compared to the easy way I could scan photos 20 years ago with my old Canon scanner.
