Microsoft Windows 11

HP 4302 Printer - installed the drivers and HP Scan application via HP's website on various laptops with Windows 10 and 11.  Laptop was connected via USB cable, not firewall enabled, no anti virus.

When I try to scan via 'HP Scan' whether it's using the Printer's Document feeder or the flatbed scanner, I get an error message from the software:

'The scanner is currently in use. Please wait until your previous task is complete and then try again.'

I have tried the all the usual steps recommended by HP experts, turn off from plug whilst one and switch back on etc etc.

Also tried using HP Scan Doctor which states HP Scan application was not found when it clearly is installed and I am to open it.

Also restarted the Print Spooler

Hi @Irfan51dd1q1,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you've gone through several troubleshooting steps already. The error message you're encountering typically indicates that the scanner is locked in a previous operation or is not communicating properly with the HP Scan application. Here are some additional steps you can try to resolve the issue.

Check for Other Scanning Programs:

  • Ensure no other applications (such as Windows Fax and Scan or other scanning software) are currently trying to access the scanner. Close any such applications.

Reinstall the HP Scan Application:

  • Uninstall the HP Scan application from your laptop.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Download and install the latest version of the HP Scan application from the HP Support website.

Check USB Connection:

  • Ensure that the USB cable is securely connected to both the printer and the laptop.
  • Try using a different USB port on your laptop.
  • If possible, use a different USB cable to rule out any cable issues.

Run HP Print and Scan Doctor Again:

  • If HP Print and Scan Doctor is not recognizing the HP Scan application, you may need to reinstall it after reinstalling the HP Scan application. This tool often fixes communication issues.

Set the Printer as Default:

  • Go to Settings > Devices > Printers & Scanners.
  • Find your HP 4302 printer in the list, click on it, and select Manage.
  • Click on Set as default.

Disable Windows Scanner and Printer Sharing:

  • Go to Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center.
  • Click on Change advanced sharing settings.
  • Scroll down to the All Networks section and ensure that Turn off printer and file sharing is selected.

Update Drivers:

  • Make sure your printer drivers are up to date. Go to the HP Support website, enter your printer model, and download the latest drivers.

Check for Windows Updates:

  • Sometimes, pending Windows updates can cause issues. Go to Settings > Update & Security and check for updates.

Reset the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait for about 60 seconds, plug it back in, and turn it on.

Try a Different User Account:

  • If possible, create a new user account on your Windows laptop and try scanning from there. This can help rule out user profile-related issues.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
