HP Officejet 5740
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have had issues with scanning from HP Printers for years. Every time it fails, i had to have a tech remote in and correct it. It would last a couple of months and then fail again. I bought the HP 5740 after being told my current printer was not compatible with Windows 10. The problem continued. Several months ago, I had to have a tech remote in and fix it again. Now it is failing again. When I try to scan using the HP Officejet 5740 series, it tells me I have to connect a new device.  The Print and Scan Doctor is useless. It either tells me the problem has been corrected or fails to complete the diagnostic.  Wheb I try to scan from the printer I get a message that says "The scan could not be completed. Make sure that the scanning software has been installed and configured on your computer, then try again" I do not know where to go from here. I do not believe I should have to pay for a tech to resolve this since it has been an ongoing issue from the time I purchased the computer and HP has never been able to resolve it.

Hi

Thanks for using the HP Forums.

Let's go through a few steps to uninstall and reinstall the drivers:

Step 1: Uninstall the Drivers:

Please follow the steps provided to uninstall the printer software in the link: Uninstalling the Printer Software (Windows)

Also, please follow the steps provided below to completely remove the printer software from printer properties.

Steps to remove printer driver files from Print Server Properties:

  1. Open the Print Server Properties dialog window by doing one of the following:
    • Click the Start menu and in the search field type 'printui /s /t2' (without the quotes), and then press Enter or click it in the search list.
    • Press WINDOWS-R on the keyboard to bring up the Run window, type in 'printui /s /t2' (without the quotes), and then press Enter or click OK.
    • From the Start menu or the Start screen:
    • Open Devices and Printers.
    • Select any printer and then click "Print server properties" at the top of the window.
    • Click on the Drivers tab.
  2. Select the printer driver you wish to uninstall.
  3. Click the Remove button.
  4. Select "Remove driver and driver package" and click OK.

Step 2: Download and install the Drivers from the wizard:

Key in your printer model, Operating System and download & install the FULL feature software.

Hope that helps!

This partially fixed the problem. I can scan from the printer app found in the "printer and scanners" page in the computer settings. But if I try by using the scan button on the printer I get a message which reads "The scan could not be completed. Make sure that scanning software has been installed and configured on your computer, then try again."  I ran the scan doctor again and it stated that the scanner was working, but when I hit the test scan button, it stated "The HP Officejet series was not found." I rebooted the printer, including unplugging it for over 10 seconds. I retried everything and got the same results and messages. I also tried the HP Officejet 5740 series, which has worked in the past. Instead of going to a task page, it opened a Device Setup & Software page. The options were Connect a New Device, Reconfigure Wireless Settings and Add More Software. I mentioned in my post that this has been an ongoing problem with HP all-in-one printers. An HP tech remoted into the computer several months ago and resolved the issues, but now they are back again. Where do I go now to resolve the issues of not scanning from the printer, not creating a test scan and apparently not recognizing that the printer is set up in the HP Officejet 5740 Series program.

Hi

Can you try this:

HP Scan Extended

ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/scanners/HPScanExt/HPScanExt.msi

Once it's downloaded and installed, go to Start > All Programs > HP > HP Scan Extended > Run "HP Scan Extended"

Hope that helps!.
