We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about HP Solution Center not working : Adobe Flash Player Error and Unable to Scan.

Recent error message scanning to USB drive " Memory device has been removed"  It has not been removed

Seems to scan normally but message pops up on printer screen.  nothing in the HP scan folder.

Have tried power reset and firm ware update and still error message. USB drive appears clean with no debris noted in USB slot and flash drive enters easily. Any ideas? this seems to be a common problem with the 6978.

Hi @jek2day,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're experiencing a persistent issue with your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 when scanning to a USB drive. This is a known issue, and here's a list of troubleshooting steps you can try:

USB Compatibility:

  • Make sure the USB drive is formatted in a compatible file system with the printer, such as FAT32.

  • Avoid using USB drives with large capacities that might not be compatible or properly detected by the printer.

Check USB Drive and Port:

  • Try using a different USB drive to see if the issue persists.
  • Check the USB port for any physical damage or debris, even if it seems clean.

Printer Settings:

  • Ensure that your printer firmware is updated to the latest version, which you've already done, but it's worth double-checking.

  • Revisit the printer's scan settings to ensure that everything is configured properly.

Scan to Email or Network:

  • As an alternative, try scanning to an email or network location to see if the scanning function is working aside from the USB issue.

Reset USB Port:

  • Sometimes, performing a "partial reset" of the printer can resolve USB recognition issues.

    I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

Thank you for the troubleshooting tips.

Had some success scanning one page to a 2GB reformatted flash drive

More than one page ,received the error message that the "memory device has been removed"

Able to scan multiple pages successfully to email.

Is a 32GB PNY flash drive formatted to FAT32 compatible.

I believe the firmware has been updated. How can I verify this?

Thank you

Hello Jerry,

Thank you for your tech advise on the HP 6978.

Tried your steps but still have problems scanning to a fat32 formatted 32GB PNY flash drive.

Was able to email multiple pages to my email account though.

Scanning was successful to a 2GB generic fat 32 flash drive one page only. Multiple pages got memory device removed error.

Is there an optimum size flash drive for the 6978?

Thanks
