Edits - Update Content

New release - Dated July 1, 2021

Version 128.1.219.0

Comments

A test of PDF scan - simple eight page document - shows the "scan size" bug is fixed.

This is true for my test - everyone should, of course, try this for themselves.

NOTE:  Regardless, there is no "going back" to an older release.

If you have Automatic Updates switched on in the Store, the app is likely updated now.

You can also manually check / update applications.

Microsoft Store - Application Updates

Windows (Start) > Microsoft Store

In the upper right corner, click on the three horizontal dots ...

Select Settings > App updates > "Update apps automatically" = ON

In the upper right corner, click on the three horizontal dots ...

Select Downloads and Updates > Get Updates

If the application updates, consider:  Restart the computer and log in

==============================================================

Older Content

The printer is OK.

At this writing, HP Smart has a reported bug that causes PDF files to be inflated in both page size and file size.

HP is working on the solution.

When the fix is ready, a new version of HP Smart will be released in the  Microsoft Store

If the Store is set to update on its own, you can wait for the applications in the Store to update.

OR

Microsoft Store - Application Updates

Windows (Start) > Microsoft Store

In the upper right corner, click on the three horizontal dots ...

Select Settings > App updates > "Update apps automatically" = ON

In the upper right corner, click on the three horizontal dots ...

Select Downloads and Updates > Get Updates

If the application updates, consider:  Restart the computer and log in

What to use while waiting for the solution?

What if?

If you have a "fat" file for which you no longer have the original document,

If you need to have a properly sized scan file,

Print the document at a reduced "Shrink to Fit" size,

Re-scan the printed document into the computer using OTHER than HP Smart.

NOTE for Windows S mode users:

  • Windows in S mode only allows installation of applications from the Microsoft Store.  Windows "S" mode scan options are therefore limited to those applications you can install from the Store (marked in Green).
  • Windows 10 (full Windows) can make use of any of the "blue" or the "green" options.

NOTE:  Alternatives do not necessarily provide the same settings / features as HP Smart.

HP Scan - Part of the Full Feature Software / full driver printer software.

Well it's unfortunate HP support had me on the phone for (literally) 3 hours yesterday trying to find the problem, unloading the printer, reloading it, resetting the printer to factory standards.  Never mentioning that they are aware of the problem.

@Michellemv

Rats.  That is unfortunate.

I guess I should have qualified my answer.

HP teams to whom we have reported the issue are aware.

I cannot speak to what HP Technical Support knows or does not know.

I am long retired - that said, I do remember there was sometimes a gap between departments communicating with each other.  HP is no different, I think.

Stay Safe.

Carry On.

Thanks Dragon-Fur. I have started having the identical problem when using HP Scan & Capture from my MFP-M477 device.  (Which previously worked OK, although I preferred the extra control in the earlier HP Scan app.) I have these HP programs installed:

tardx_0-1623342224749.png

The Scan & Capture version is V40.0.245.0; HP Smart is V127.1.115.0. HP Support Assistant's only message is re '49 errors' which I don't have,

Any idea how to find out whether/when the 'large file' bug will be fixed?

@tardx

Not sure - Laser printers have their own hierarchy - I'm not really familiar with the laser printer software or the setup.

That said, HP Scan and Capture is an application from the  Microsoft Store

The app can be uninstalled in Settings > Apps > App and Features

Restart the computer and log in.

Install a fresh copy of the application

Will that work?

Honestly, I don't know.

Windows can "do things" to printer software and applications.

Sometimes removing the app and reinstalling works - sometimes it does not.

"Should" is certainly not the same as "Yes, will work".  😶

When to see fix for "large file".

Again, not sure.

We never receive official word from HP "ahead of time".

The statement that there will be a fix for HP Smart is a courtesy based on what I could find - hopefully, the fix is going to happen sooner rather than later.

HP Smart and HP Scan & Capture both result in an oversized PDF. Reinstalling seems to make no difference. The HP Support app and site give no indication that any problem is recognized.

Scanning the HP Smart test page to JPEG results in the correct number of pixels for a letter (8.5"x11") page at 300dpi : 2544x3296.

Scanning the same page to PDF gives a reported file of 26.5"x33.3". Both files are 654kB in size.

Assuming the same number of pixels have been captured in both cases, this means the PDF is being generated at 96dpi instead of 300dpi i.e. screen-res and not print-res.  This is evidently the problem.

I guess all I can do is wait for a fix. 😞

HP Recommended

@tardx

True - wait for a fix.

Side Bar...

I cannot duplicate the issue using the HP Scan and Capture application.

Single page PDF test shows page size is OK when the scanned and saved document is opened in Adobe Reader DC  for printing.

That said, we are not in the same situation / environment.

What happens to you might be different.   ?

There is no current bug report on HP Scan and Capture for "large page size" scans.

Stay safe.

Carry on.

Thanks. Here's a new discovery on which I'd appreciate advice:

In HP Scan & Capture, I get different results depending on which 'device' I select (both the same hardware with slightly different drivers):

tardx_0-1623360354126.png

The top one works OK and the bottom one gives the 'big file' problem. The top one uses 'HP Color Laserjet Pro MFP477PCL6' driver V8.0.1329.6488.

The bottom one uses 'HP Universal Printing PCL6' driver V61.230.1.24296. The additional driver files are different on each.

Uninstall/reinstall the printer, do you think?

Sorry - Laser printers and their software a largely a mystery to me.

Best start a new thread and ask the Community a new question.

No need to re-post once you have the image added to your new thread.
