Note: From May 1, 2024, the HP Scan and Capture app will no longer be available (retired) in the Microsoft Store and HP will not release any further app updates. Alternatively, you can download HP Smart from the Microsoft Store. For more information on how to set up your printer using the HP Smart app, go to HP printer setup (HP Smart app).

HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 Wide Format All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

I am trying to use the HP app to scan to my OfficeJet Pro 7740 printer.  I have had no problem doing so until I got a new company laptop and moved onto a VPN.  Now, I have somehow lost the scanner function (printing works fine).  I have gone through all the troubleshooting steps via the Print and Scan Doctor several dozen times with no luck and I keep being told "The IP Address entered is either incorrect or it is from a different wireless network that has the same name as your network."  Neither is the case.  I have checked for updates, tried reconnecting to wifi, device re-cycle/ reboot and still, nothing is working.  Please let me know if anyone has thoughts!

Hi @CTinTC

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

That’s frustrating, especially since printing works fine but scanning doesn’t. Since you’re now using a VPN, it’s possible that the network settings are interfering with the scanner’s ability to communicate properly. Here are some steps that might help:

Disable VPN Temporarily

  • Try disconnecting from the VPN and then attempt scanning.
  • Some VPNs block local network traffic, preventing the scanner from being detected.

Manually Add the Scanner Using IP Address

  • Find your printer’s IP address (you can check this on the printer’s display or print a network configuration page).
  • Open Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
  • Click Add a Printer, then select Add a network, wireless, or Bluetooth printer.
  • Choose The printer I want isn’t listed, then enter the IP address manually.

Check Firewall & Network Isolation Settings

  • Some corporate laptops have firewall rules that block scanning.
  • Open Windows Defender Firewall and allow HP scanning software through.
  • If your company IT team manages the firewall, you may need their assistance.

Use HP Smart Instead of HP Scan

  • HP retired the HP Scan and Capture app in 2024.
  • Try scanning using HP Smart instead.

Reset Printer Network Settings

  • On the printer’s control panel, go to Setup > Network Settings > Restore Network Defaults.
  • Reconnect the printer to Wi-Fi.

Let me know if any of these steps help! If the issue persists, it might require your IT intervention.
