Common problems HP Solution Center not working : Adobe Flash Player Error and Unable to scan
We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about HP Solution Center not working : Adobe Flash Player Error and Unable to Scan.
HP Recommended

Hi,
After upgrading my laptop to Windows 11 Pro 24H2, I reinstalled my HP Officejet 8710 printer software.
Coming to the scanner, I now realize that it is no longer possible to scan to OCR / editable PDF format.
Moreover, browsing through the available software, I find out that the OCR functionality is now encapsulated in some "HP Universal Scan" software, which seems not to be supported/available on HP 87xxx Officejet printers.

I also tried to directly use the ReadIris 16 OCR software, which used to be integrated in the installation files, but it found no stable way to use it - several hangs or crashes experienced.

Any other idea to restore a usable scanning functionality on my "not so old" 8710 printer ?

Thanks and best regards.

Hi @sripoll

If Universal Scan Driver is not in the list, your printer does not support it. For more information about other scan options, go to How to scan with an HP printer.

Hi @sripoll

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

For HP print drivers downloaded after June 2022, the HP Universal Scan software is required to enable the Save as Editable Text (OCR) shortcut in HP Scan. HP print drivers downloaded before June 2022 do not need to install HP Universal Scan.

Install HP Universal Scan (Windows)

Install the HP Universal Scan software to enable saving scans as editable text with Optical Character Recognition (OCR) in HP Scan.

On your computer, go to HP Software and Driver Downloads.

Select Printer, and then enter and select your printer name.

On the software and drivers webpage, look for Universal Scan Driver in the list.

If Universal Scan Driver is in the list, select it, click Download next to HP Universal Scan, and then follow the prompts to install the software.

If Universal Scan Driver is not in the list, your printer does not support it. For more information about other scan options, go to How to scan with an HP printer.

Save a scan as Editable Text (OCR)

Use HP Scan for Windows to save scan files as editable text with Optical Character Recognition (OCR).

Place the original on the scanner glass or into the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF).

CAUTION:

The ADF mechanism can damage photos. To copy or scan photos, use an alternate method, such as the scanner glass or your mobile device camera with the HP Smart app.

In Windows, search for and open HP Scan.

From HP Scan, select Save as Editable Text (OCR) in the list of shortcuts, and then change any desired scan settings.

Selecting Save as Editable Text (OCR) in HP Scan

Click Scan.

The printer scans the original and a preview of each page displays.

In the Destination field, choose how you want to save the editable text using the File Type drop-down.

To save the text with the original formatting, select Rich Text (.rtf) (default).

To save the text only without the original formatting, select Text (.txt).

Click Save.

When prompted, choose where you want to save the file on the computer, and then click Save.

HP Scan saves the file to the computer.

Thanks for your reply, the issue I face is precisely that the HP Universal Scan software doesn't appear in the list of available software for OfficeJet 8710.

My question: is there any workaround ? For instance, what about reverting to an older version of the printer driver, dated before the cutoff date.

Remark: June 2022 seems to me a very old date for me, I reinstalled my printer at least twice since, without experiencing this scanner issue.
Thanks!
