HP 8720 cannot receive fax

Have had the 8720 for a while but never used the fax capability until recently.  Sending faxes with no problems, but cannot receive (ever).  Have gone through all the troubleshooting steps and everything appears fine.  Auto answers on second ring and it appears to be receiving from sender but after some time says "fax receive fail".  Nothing shows up in error log, but last transactions log says "no fax" for result.

Does anyone know if i must use a 2 wire phone line?  Looks like mine is 4 wire.

As far as I know most home phone lines are 4-wire lines, but only 2 of them are used if you've got one phone number. The others are used if you have multiple phone numbers so you can carry multiple lines over the same wire.

I've got faxing working with a 4-line phone line, so that shouldn't be a problem. Have you tried running a fax test? And have you tried receiving from multiple numbers? You can try using the HP Fax Test service if you haven't already (1-888-HPFAXME).

Problem Solved!

So I tried using a 2-wire phone line and I can now receive a fax!  Sending was not a problem with the 4-wire, but I could not receive.
