Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

Hi,

My HP MFP178nw color printer is not able to scan any documents.

It was working fine but recently I have this "Couldn't connect to Scanner" issue.

My display is showing "Prepare new imaging drum" , is this the reason ?

Hi @ahryan,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP Color Laser MFP 178nw printer is unable to scan and is displaying the message "Prepare new imaging drum," it's possible that the imaging drum is impacting the scanner's functionality. However, the "Couldn't connect to Scanner" issue is typically related to connectivity problems. Here are steps to troubleshoot both the imaging drum message and the scanner connectivity issue:

Step 1: Address the Imaging Drum Message

Check Imaging Drum Status:

  • The message "Prepare new imaging drum" indicates that the imaging drum is nearing the end of its life.
  • The imaging drum is crucial for print quality, but it shouldn't typically affect scanning functionality. However, it's best to address any error messages the printer displays.

Replace Imaging Drum:

  • If the drum needs replacing, follow the instructions in your printer's manual to replace it.
  • You can order a new imaging drum from HP or authorized retailers.

Step 2: Resolve the "Couldn't Connect to Scanner" Issue

Check the Basics

Restart Devices:

  • Turn off your printer, computer, and any network equipment (routers, switches, etc.). Wait for a minute, then turn them back on.

Check Connections:

  • Ensure the printer is properly connected to your network or directly to your computer via USB.
  • Verify the printer is connected to the same network as your computer if using Wi-Fi.

Use HP Print and Scan Doctor

Download HP Print and Scan Doctor:

  • Visit the HP Print and Scan Doctor page and download the tool.

Run the Tool:

  • Open HP Print and Scan Doctor and follow the on-screen

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
