Note: From May 1, 2024, the HP Scan and Capture app will no longer be available (retired) in the Microsoft Store and HP will not release any further app updates. Alternatively, you can download HP Smart from the Microsoft Store. For more information on how to set up your printer using the HP Smart app, go to HP printer setup (HP Smart app).

HP DeskJet Pro 9014
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I own a HP 9014 scanner/printer that was always able to scan with IRIS/OCR. Now in January 2021 all of a sudden the printer and scanning software couldn't recognize the printer anymore. So I installed the new HP Smart to update driver and software.

The scanner and printer finally work but this software only allows me to use scanner and printer through the cloud. I definitely don't want to use a cloud.

In a post to avoid the cloud somebody suggested installing HP Scan Extended. For the printer and scanner I can definitely work now without accessing the cloud but there is no option for creating editable text with the scanner.

In another post "Scanning with IRIS/OCR from 01_24_2018" the image posted there shows a scan shortcut in HP Scan Extended "Save as Editable Text (OCR)" and in Destination / File Typ the option "Rich text (rtf.) ". My recently downloaded version of HP Smart Extended does not give me this option. I clicked through all the menues. There is none that allows me to create doc or rtf files, only pdf, jpg, bmp, gif ... I can find the doc-option in the new HP Smart but as I said before I don't wan't to use a cloud and receive my scans by email.

Does anybody have a suggestion to make OCR work without cloud or have a newer version of HP Scan Extended with the the OCR option?

@AliceC1012, Welcome to HP Support Community!

Follow the steps below to isolate and resolve the issue-

Use HP Print and Scan Doctor

Download HP Print and Scan Doctor and run the program. It will automatically diagnose and fix any scanning issues.

For more information, go to https://support.hp.com/us-en/topic/printscandoctor

I recommend you delete the driver and root level and retry, follow the steps below:

1) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features

2) Select your HP Printer

3) Select Uninstall

4) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers

5) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose ‘Delete’ or ‘Remove Device’

6) Open up the run command with the “Windows key + R” key combo.

7) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe”

😎 Click on the “Drivers” tab

9) Look for an HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom

10) Select Ok

11) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows

12) Close Devices and Printers.

Use this link to download and install the new driver. Configure the printer and try scanning.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.
