Note: From May 1, 2024, the HP Scan and Capture app will no longer be available (retired) in the Microsoft Store and HP will not release any further app updates. Alternatively, you can download HP Smart from the Microsoft Store. For more information on how to set up your printer using the HP Smart app, go to HP printer setup (HP Smart app).

HP E58650

I have a HP E58650 Multi-function and it refuses to connect to any scanning App.

How could HP have ducked this up so badly...

The HP Dr Scan app just fails to report anything sensible.

I can print perfectly to the printer, can hit the config page over the network, everything is perfect EXCEPT for the ability to scan.

It's because Managed printers are not supposed to use apps and software for scanning, managed printers have scan to computer scan to email or scan to network scan to cloud etc.

So why does the software package for this printer include the HP Scan app??

This is an enterprise level product and really designed to use the embedded scan to folder setup and not desktop scanning app. At the minimum you would need the enterprise universal scan app if you want to use a desktop app but I would strongly recommend you consider the embedded scan to folder setup. The advantage of scan to folder from the printer is that if there are multiple users (this device is intended for small work groups), it is faster and less hassle to just walk up, touch an icon and the document is dropped into a folder on a server or workstation.

So, why not do what my $200 Epson Multi-function does?

Uses the installed driver on the PC to receive the files.

You go to the touch screen, it gives you a list of computers it can see that has the ESPON scanning app installed, and you can SCAN direct to that PC?

I understand the whole Corporate thing, perfect if you are sitting in a DOMAIN with emails servers abundant but not always possible with SOHO & I think HP are missing a market that EPSON have cornered.

Or alternately this is NOT a SOHO printer.

You are correct, this is not a SoHo printer. This printer is designed to print 50-100 pages a day and if that type of volume is not met, eventually you will start having issues with black ink fade because of printhead clogging, especially if you are in a habit of turning the device completely off for extended periods of time. One of the reasons in my opinion why HP binned this whole technology 2 years ago.

No email domains or other gadgetry is required to do scan to folder and once configured you can have 1 touch scanning using Quick Sets.
