HP ENVY 5540 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

When scanning documents on my printer to the computer with several different scan software it still produces a very large file when saved as a PDF.   eg. HP Smart software - A one page greyscale document, 300 dpi, Basic PDF, high compression.  Saves as a 393 KB document ?
A 10 page document was well in 1500 KB !

How do I get a smaller file size ?

That size seems correct.  I run my CM1415 at only 200dpi but it is capable of 1200 for scanning images.  I get huge sizes when scanning at 1200 DPI.  The detail at 1200 is needed when doing photo editing.

You will not be able to reduce the size of the document if it contains images.  If only text then OCR might work.

To reduce even more you can try OCR.  I looked at the software for your 5540 and it does not support OCR directly.

You would have to obtain a 3rd party app to convert PDF image document to Word or whatever document type you want.

The main way would be to lower the scan resolution. For most black and white documents you should not need more then 100dpi to get a good quality PDF.

There're also many other practical methods for compressing the PDF file size.
