HP Officejet Pro 8500 Wireless All-in-One Printer - A909g

Hello everyone! I have an HP Officejet Pro 8500 Wireless model #a909g printer/scanner. When I try to scan to email from the printer display screen, I get an error message "Username or password is incorrect. Make sure both user account and password are valid." I recently attempted to change my SMTP/email username and password. I then clicked "Save and Test." I got the same message..."username or password is incorrect..." What I've figured out is that for some reason, it's not saving my new password. It reverts back to the previous password...which doesn't work either. It saved the new username but it won't apply/save the new password? Does anyone know why? Thanks.

Welcome to the HP Community Forum.

If other settings have been rechecked,.

If removing and rebuilding the Profile / SMTP setup does not work,

Try / Consider

It's possible your email provider is now requiring an App Password to access third party applications.

For example, in Mid-2022, G-Mail disabled "Less Secure Apps".

Other providers have perhaps followed suit (disabled less secure access to their products).

and

Create / Select app and (then) create your app password

  • At the bottom, choose Select app and choose the app you using > Select device and choose the device you’re using > Generate.
  • Follow the instructions to enter the App Password. The App Password is the 16-character code in the yellow bar on your device.
  • Tap Done.

Tip: Most of the time, you’ll only have to enter an App Password once per app or device, so don’t worry about memorizing it.

Assign / set that new App Password in your Scan to Email profile as the password.

Save and Test

Hi and thanks for responding. Comcast is my email provider. I did remove and rebuild the profiles. What's weird is it saved the username change but not the password. I know that because my new password has more letters than my old one and I counted the dots after I hit save and test and it's 2 dots short...so it's not saving the new password and reverting back to the old one. Are you saying my provider, Comcast, pay be requiring an APP Password now instead of my email password?

Update -

You are editing faster than I type.

Smiling.

Yes, I am saying you should check with Comcast about the App Password requirement for EWS / SMTP access to Scan to Email.

Original Content -

You are welcome.

If you have not done so,

The next step:

Check with Comcast whether your email service is impacted by the need for an App Password.

A quick check finds this document:

Turn Your Access to Third Party Email Programs On/Off in Xfinity Email

There is what appears to be a link to (possibly) a Virtual agent at the end of the document.

There is not likely much to be done on the printer side that you have not already thought to do.

None of these will have any impact unless the problem is only one of initial connection to the provider (Comcast).

For example,

Restart everything, including the router that controls your network

HP printer turns off unexpectedly or repeatedly > Step 2

Thank you. I will try contacting Comcast about a possible app password for the smtp password. Fingers crossed! I have been troubleshooting for days and I'm exhausted!
