Envy 7640
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

When scanning from the flatbad on my HP Envy 7640, the scan size is always 8 1/2" x 11" even if the document I am scanning is 5" x 7". This results in me having to crop all the documents I scan to the original size. Is there a setting I can change to have the scanner detect the size of the document being scanned?

Hi,

From the printer icon on your desktop or on the start menu (HP Envy 7640) click on Scan, then on Scan a Document or Photo.

Ensure the Scan Type is set as Photo and not as Document.

Ensure the Scan Size is set as Auto Detect Size and press on Scan.

Now it will auto crop the detected image on the flatbed glass.

This resolved my issue if I was scanning from my laptop that is connected to the HP Envy 7640.

I need to clarify my question in more detail. I am scanning from the flatbed directly to a USB Flash Memory drive as a JPG at 600 DPI. This is when is scans the 5" x 7" photo as an 8 1/2" x 11" document.

At one point over the past two years of owning the Envy 7640, the scanner did auto detect the size to scan.

Thanks for clarifying.

From the printer touch Scan and then select Memory Device.

Follow the options on the screen, you should see an option to select a scan size on that screen.

Select eight 5 x 7 or Automatic if available and then press Scan.

Sadly, there is no option for selecting a scan size.

Below is the options available.

1. Scan

2. Memory Device

3A. File Type

     1. JPEG Color

     2. PDF Color

3B. Resolution

     1. 600 dpi (scanner glass only)

     2. 300 dpi

     3. 200 dpi

There is a small icon on the lower left of the screen that allows for a preview of the scan before finalizing the final scan. There are no additional options.
