I have about 400 photos to be digitized.  Is it practical to scan multiple photos at a time on the Envy 7640 and parse them into individual JPEG files?  Extensions required?

Maybe.

  • First thing is to determine whether your printer software includes the option to scan multiple images and save them as individual files.
  • Next, assuming the option is supported, you need to decide how much time and effort the task is worth.
  • In my opinion, if you can keep the original photos at home and in your control, this is a better option just because you are not risking the photos by sending the lot to a photo processing center.

Idea...

Full Feature Software

HP ENVY 7640 e-All-in-One Printer series Full Feature Software and Drivers

If your Full Feature Software is installed,

If HP Scan provides the "Detect Boundaries" or "Detect Photos" or "Detect Content" option (wording varies),

Then

You can scan images placed on the flatbed as individual images / files and save them to your computer.

Example - General Options / Setup

Place objects to be scanned on the flatbed (glass)

Open the Printer Assistant shortcut icon on the Desktop named for your printer

Select to Scan

Open HP Scan

Adjust the settings on the main print menu, including a shortcut to scan / save the objects as JPG

Select the "Detect Boundaries" or "Detect Photos" or "Detect Content" option

Click More >

Open Destinations and set the options you want (for example, location)

Optional

    Check other sub-menus

If you open a sub-menu requiring it, Click OK or Cancel to leave the sub-menu

When ready,

Click < Less

click Scan

What else?

Although the software is older now,

If your printer software is installed,

If your printer software does not support the "Detect Photos" option,

You might be able to use this HP Scan subset to accomplish the same results.

HP Scan Extended

  • Download-Save-Install >  HP Scan Extended
  • HPSE is a subset an older Full Feature Software suite.
  • HPSE features are very similar to the HP Scan Software released after 2015.
  • Although HPSE appears to be a separate software, HPSE is dependent on the infrastructure provided by the Full Feature Software.  The Full Feature Software for your printer should be installed before installing and using HPSE.
  • OPTIONAL:  Add HP Scan Extended shortcut to Taskbar / Send to Desktop / Pin to Start
    • Open File Explorer > Navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\HP\HP Scan Extended\bin
    • Right-Click HPScan.exe > Select Pin to Taskbar / Send to Desktop / Pin to Start

  • HP Scan Extended features include (and are not limited to): Single, Multiple scans, Image and PDF scans, Email as PDF / JPEG, Source selection, Page Size choices include Auto-Detect (extracts image / document boundary).  Might include OCR (Save as Editable Text).
