HP LaserJet 1536dnf MFP
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

Dear Sirs:

I have a HP LaserJet 1536dnf MFP connected in our network.  It was working fine with a PC running Windows 7 - 32bit.  That PC died and switched to a new one and installed Windows 8.1 - 64 bit.  To install the printer I downloaded from HP the "HP LaserJet Full Feature Software and Driver - hp_M1530_MFP_full_Solution_15188.exe" software.

Upon running it, the software does not find the printer when searching, neither using the IP address, Host name or MAC address as suggested.  Repeated the process turning off the windows firewall with no success.  I can see the embedded web page of the printer using its IP address and a ping operation also works fine.

I was able to install the software moving the PC closer to the printer (it is in another room) and installing it using the USB port.  Everything works fine including the Scanning  which is my main interest in this case.  After that I changed the printer port to a Standard TCP-IP port and was able to print using the wired network connection but it does not recognize the Scanner, when I run the HP Scan software installed, it says the HP LJ M1530 MFP series Scan was not found.  I have the IT people at our university check the network connections, cables, configuration, etc., but they found nothing wrong.  It seems odd that the printer can be reached using a browser and using the IP address as the URL, but HP software is incapable to find !!!.  Also I installed the HP support Assistant but this software cannot find the printer either.

Please advise what to do to be able to scan via network as we used to do previously with the old PC.

Thank you very much in advance,

Welcome to HP Forums, this is a great place to get support, find answers and tips,
Thank you for posting your query, I'll be more than glad to help you out 🙂

As I understand (Please correct me, If I'm wrong) the printer isn't being recognised by most of the HP Softwares installed on your computer and when the WiFi only works when the printer is placed right next to the router / computer,

Although, I will need a few more details to provide an accurate solution:

When was the last time it worked without any of these issues?

Are you referring to the usage of Airprint?

Apart from the steps mentioned, is there anything else you've done to resolve the issue before posting on HP Forums?

In the meantime, please utilize the below articles and related posts that I've collated to help you out:

Please keep me posted,

Let me know if those steps worked for you.  If they did, that’s awesome!  Give us some reinforcement by clicking the solution and kudos buttons, that’ll help us and others see that we’ve got the answers!
Good Luck.

Dear Mr. Riddle_Decipher:

Thank you for your prompt answer.  Let me answer your questions::

1)  This printer does not have Wi-Fi,  what I said was that the HP software worked fine when installing the printer and scanner drivers and the scan and toolbox software connecting it to the PC via USB cable.  When I did that, the printer printed fine and I was able to use the HP scan software to scan.  Notice that I did this out of desperation of not being able of installing the software via network.  After that I went to the printer properties and changed the port from USB to a Standard TCP-IP port created by the Windows operating system.  I removed the USB cable and now the PC can print via the wired network, but the scanner is not found when I try the HP scan software.

2) As I said the printer worked without any problem via wired network using PC's with the Windows 7 32 bit operating system.  In fact in our workgroup there are 5 PC's, and besides mine the other four continue to work fine.  I had to change mine because my hard disk crashed, and since the PC was kind of old I got a new one, and this time the University IT personnel installed Windows 8.1 – 64 bits as they don’t support Windows 7 anymore.  The usual deal is that they give you the PC with Windows 8.1 and Office 2013 and you have to install the rest of the software, in my case data analysis programs, FORTRAN compiler, graphics programs, Adobe reader, etc.  plus the printer software.  So in short, the printer (and its scanner function) is still working via a wired network for all the machines in our laboratory some running Windows 7 and others Windows XP but for mine using Windows 8.1 64 bit it only partially works after tinkering with the printing port as I described.  And to answer your questions it was working in my PC two weeks ago when I had the hard disk crash.  I had no way of checking if with that particular machine will work as it has no hard disk right now and that PC is scheduled for recycling.

3) I am NOT using Airprint as all our machines are connected via Ethernet cables and we have Wi-Fi only for a couple of old laptops, our personal Tablets and occasionally a cell phone and from these devices we usually do not print or scan.

4)  Besides what I mentioned, which was all steps suggested by the HP installation program and which are also the steps suggested in the forums I searched, I have not done anything else.  Except of course installing connecting with the USB cable (by the way without disconnecting the Ethernet connection) and then trying the “trick” of changing the port to a TCP-IP port.  As explained this solution worked only for printing but it did not work for the scanner part.  In other words, I can print but not scan which we do a lot in our work in our laboratory.

5)  I have checked the articles suggested but found nothing that can help.

I believe this has to be a HP software problem as I can reach the embedded web configuration page of the printer using Firefox, Chrome or Internet Explorer and using the IP address of the printer as the URL, so it is not a network or subnetwork problem.  Somehow the HP software is not “reading” (to put it a name) our network.

I hope that you can come up with some solution to this problem.  Thank you very much for your effort and I’ll wait for your next post.

Thank you for the detailed response, Professor.

I appreciate the time you've taken to write that down and I'll try not to let you down,

I had to take some time off and research this situation

And I have a few steps that will help, Although, This requires you do repeat a few steps that may have done before,

To ensure all the steps are performed in proper order to cut down on irrelevant steps:

HP provides a free tool called HP Print and Scan Doctor to diagnose and resolve printing and scanning problems. Download and run HP Print and Scan Doctor  to quickly and automatically perform several troubleshooting tasks known to resolve this issue. When this link is clicked, HP Print and Scan Doctor is downloaded using your Internet browser's download capabilities.

  1. On the Print and Scan Doctor Welcome screen, wait for the tool to locate your printer.

    • If your printer is listed, click your printer, then click Next.

    • If your printer is not listed, turn the printer off and back on, then click Retry.

  2. If your printer is still not in the list, or the tool cannot communicate with the printer, try the steps provided to connect the printer, then clickRetry.

  3. If your printer is still not in the list, or the tool cannot communicate with the printer, click Connect, then follow the on-screen instructions to connect the printer to the network.

The tool provides helpful information to set up your networked printer, including network login information and current network information for the computer.
