Note: From May 1, 2024, the HP Scan and Capture app will no longer be available (retired) in the Microsoft Store and HP will not release any further app updates. Alternatively, you can download HP Smart from the Microsoft Store. For more information on how to set up your printer using the HP Smart app, go to HP printer setup (HP Smart app).

HP MFP M281FDW PRINTER/SCANNER 30
Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

I have an HP MFP M281FDW PRINTER/SCANNER. Recently, when I scan a document as a PDF it will save as an oversized document (size 2544 x 3296). As a result, it is enormous and I have to reduce the size percentage to 32% in order to view the document. This is a serious problem when I have to send scans to clients (which I do a lot!). I have no idea how to reduce the size so that it is scanning normally again. I am using the HP Smart app to scan but I have also used the standard app installed with the printer (same results with both apps). The settings for the documents are as follows:  (Scan as Document, Letter size (8.5x11), color, DPI 300.) If I reduce the DPI to 75, it will scan at the normal size as it is supposed to, but it serious degrades the quality and that is not acceptable in a professional setting.

I am assuming there is a setting that is engaged that is causing this issue, as I have had this printer for several years and never had this problem. I recently purchased a new computer that is used with this printer so there could be a setting with the computer. Can anyone help with this?

Btw, I also have a Neat Scanner, and it scans to regular size without any issues.

I have had this printer/scanner for a couple of years and never had this problem. I

The printer is OK.

The Windows File System, to the extent that it is involved with this particular issue, is OK.

What?

There is a "bug" being investigated in HP Smart that results in creating a larger file size and larger document page size.

Example:  8.5 x 11 inch document page size expands to 26.5 x 34.3 inch page size.

The solution is expected to be available next month.

Question:

What is the name of the other application  / "standard app" are you using that is also producing a document with a larger page size?  Why?  It is normal that increasing the DPI increases the file size to accommodate the higher density data.  It is  not normal that the application changes the page size.

How will we know when the solution is available?

Good question.

The affected application will be updated (new release) for any impacted platforms (for example, Windows / MacOS / Mobile).

How you "get" the update depends on the platform.

For example, for Windows,

If your Store is set up to install updates automatically, the update will be made for you.

AND / OR

Check / Update applications in / from the Microsoft Store

Windows key > Open the Tile for Microsoft Store

If necessary, sign into the store

Click on “See more”  (three horizontal dots )

Select Downloads and Updates

Click Get Updates

Check the list for the HP Smart version (third column)

If HP Smart has been updated,

If you have not done so since the date / time updated,

Restart the computer and log in

Thank you Dragon-Fur. So is this a HP issue or a Windows issue?

HP Recommended

@RR94

You are welcome.

It is an HP Smart application issue.

The HP Smart Windows application is made available through the Microsoft store.

When the solution is available, the updated version of HP Smart will be available in the store.

Hello Dragon-Fur,

Is there a work around until the HP Smart application is fixed and made available through the Microsoft store?

Likely, yes.

I am not as familiar with the Full Solution software for Laser printers.

In so much that I am aware, the full driver does include HP Scan.

At this writing,

The solution is expected about Mid-June in the form of a new version release for HP Smart.

What if?

If you have a "fat" file for which you no longer have the original document,

If you need to have a properly sized scan file,

Print the document at a reduced "Shrink to Fit" size,

Re-scan the printed document into the computer using OTHER than HP Smart.

OR

Use paid option to correct the file structure.

What to do while waiting for the solution?

For now, use alternative software to scan documents.

NOTE for Windows S mode users:

  • Windows in S mode only allows installation of applications from the Microsoft Store.  Windows "S" mode scan options are therefore limited to those applications you can install from the Store (marked in Green).
  • Windows 10 (full Windows) can make use of any of the "blue" or the "green" options.

Example list...

NOTE:  Alternatives do not necessarily provide the same settings / features as HP Smart.

HP Scan - part of the Full Feature Software / full driver printer software.

 Description

HP Scan and Capture is a simple and fun application that captures photos or documents from any* HP scanning device or your computer's built-in camera.  These images can be previewed, edited, saved, and shared to other applications.

* NOTE:  The correct HP drivers for your scanner must be installed from HP's Support Website.

  • Not another PDF Scanner – free program scans PDF files and image(s) as .jpeg or PDF file(s).

  • Read the Support pages for information
  • Download, save, and install the NAPS2 software to use.

Windows Scan  Microsoft Store (formally Windows Store) - Requires Windows 8 or higher

Paint (mspaint)

Older software - not brilliant - does work for scanning image files.

  • File > Select “From Scanner or Camera

I am having the same problem of my 8.5 x 11 inch scans being converted to 26.5 x 34.3 inch.  I checked the microsoft store for an update but there isn't one.  Is there a work around solution until the update is available?
