Common problems HP Solution Center not working : Adobe Flash Player Error and Unable to scan
We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about HP Solution Center not working : Adobe Flash Player Error and Unable to Scan.

HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 Wide Format All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

I need to install the software for HP TWAIN scan. There are a lot of HP instructions on how to do this, but none result in a solution.
There are instructions to install the HP FULL Software solution but that will not load, it results in errors, and the instructions say that it has the Twain Software.
There are instructions for HP Enterprise MFP - Install and Configure HP Scan Twain. Nice pictures are shown for the TWAIN Setup Wizard, but these are not to be found, even though the instructions are detailed.
I have written about this in other posts on the community website and have had some good comments, even a private message exchange.  I found another post from 2016 where some poor soul like myself was having the same problem, an HP agent gave him instructions, instructions that did not work and he expressed similar frustration as I am.
In short, HP is not supporting the HP Scan TWAIN.

Thanks.

Welcome to the HP Community --

You could be right -- the HP Twain package might not be supported as a separate entity within the full driver printer software.

HP Twain -- where and if the utility is / was part of the full driver printer software for a particular printer -- generally works (worked) as long as the full driver printer software is (was) installed and functional.

Dragon Opinion

The link in your message includes instructions for an older MFP printer group -- In my opinion, the document is perhaps not expected to be relevant to all printers or all versions of the full driver.

==========================

HP Twain

I do not have the auxiliary HP Twain utility in the full driver for my HP OfficeJet Pro 9135e -- the full driver for the 9135e has been updated and reformatted for use with the newer printer and with high-resolution computer screens.   The version of HP Scan / HP Universal Scan included in the software has been similarly updated.

The HP Twain utility did come packaged with the full driver (Full Feature) software for the OfficeJet Pro 9025

HP Twain is / was a less robust cousin of HP Scan.

From an older example package --

-------------------- --------------------

HP Twain – Scan software

Differences TWAIN and WIA: 1. WIA uses a common dialog for all devices while TWAIN uses a dialog created by the device manufacturer. This gives a closer integration and control to the TWAIN driver giving more options and advanced features on the hardware (scanner) used.

Where available, HP Twain is part of the Full Feature Software.

After the Full Feature Software is installed,

If a separate (additional) HP Twain utility is included with your printer software,

HP Twain is available in the same folder as HP Scan.

For example:

C:\Program Files (x86)\HP\HP OfficeJet Pro 9020 series\bin\

File name: TwainUtilityUI.exe

NOTE: Replace the sample printer name with your printer

NOTE 2: When installed, HP Twain also works with Irfanview software.

9025_Twain_Scan_Menu_39025_Twain_Scan_Menu_3

===========================================

What else?

The full driver printer software (Full Solution, Full Feature) is still available for your printer and Windows 11.

At this writing, the driver package is dated 2022 and is very likely suited for and supported by the latest Windows 11 environment.

I've not pulled apart the package --

The HP Twain utility might -- or might not -- be embedded in (part of) the full driver for your printer.

FYI only -- The aforementioned "HP Universal Scan" software is printer model dependent -- it is not supported on your OfficeJet Pro 7740.  Regardless, "It is not the 'droid you are looking for" -- Universal Scan and HP Twain are different animals.

Details / How-to / Examples

=====================================

Printer Software

If you have not yet done so, (re)install the Full Feature Software / full driver printer software.

HP Full Feature Software / Full Driver printer software - supports printing and scanning from the web, printing in in other software and programs (for example, Word), and provides access to the full range of Printing Preferences / Shortcuts.  The full driver generally adds at one, possibly least one, possibly two shortcuts to the Desktop: Printer Assistant, HP Scan Assistant, and/or HP Scan.

NOTES:

HP Scan is not installed if the printer does not support Scan.

The Printer Assistant is not installed if the type of full driver software does not support it.

If the printer model includes built-in Fax hardware, Fax software is installed to support the setup and use of the Fax driver.

No Sign-in required to use full driver printer software.

Reinstalling?

  • Uninstall existing full driver printer software from Programs and Features.

Reference:  Uninstall HP printer software and drivers / HP Smart

  • If your printer software includes a separate "Help" segment in Programs and Features, uninstall that, too.
  • Restart the computer and log in.
  • If the printer is connected to the computer using a printer USB cable, remove / disconnect the cable before loading the software.

HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 Wide Format All-in-One Print and Scan Driver and Accessories

In general, the web pack should load -

Download package > Save > Right-Click on the installation Package > Run as Administrator

If / When asked, opt for the Full Driver / Full Software to be installed.

Using USB?  (Re)Connect when instructed to do so.

After the software is installed, Restart the computer and sign in.

Shortcuts on the Desktop

The installation of the full driver generally adds at least one or more shortcuts to the Desktop.

Note Printer Assistant, HP Scan Assistant, and HP Scan are dependent on printer model and supported software options.

  • Printer Assistant – Where still supported as part of the full driver printer software
  • HP Scan – Shortcut on Desktop named for the printer model

OR

  • HP Scan Assistant – For those printers that no longer provide the Printer Assistant
  • HP Scan - Shortcut named for itself

AND / OR

  • When installed, HP Universal Scan software adds a separate self-named “HP Scan” shortcut
  • NOTE >> If you install the full driver printer software, installing HP Universal Scan as a standalone software from category Software & Drivers is not necessary.  The system will allow you to install both.

Printer Assistant shortcut > Tab Scan > Manage Scan to Computer > Enable

Or

HP Scan Assistant shortcut > Manage Scan to Computer > Enable

Wow, and thanks. You have really poured your heart out to help me. I will also say the same for VikramTheGreat, who also provided a lot of detail.

Midway down in your reply to my post, you referred to "Full Feature Software" and said, "In general, the web pack should load." I agree, it should, BUT... It doesn't.

As the software goes past the permissions and starts the execution, it tells me it there is an error and it stops. Further, it gives no clue as to what the error is about, this after a lengthy search.

What should be simple, is insurmountable at present.

A few years ago, I had a similar problem. Paid HP, but the update would not work. Reverted back to the original software on the CD and continued just fine ~ TWAIN drivers and all ~ no problems.

Now, I have installed a new version of ReadIris Pro 17 which requires the TWAIN driver. It is simply not there that I have found. (But, with your information, I will search again when I am at that desktop PC.)

Other than being older than a new printer, my HP printer/scanner works great, except for the software now giving me problems. My recent review of the HP website leaves me with the opinion that their house is a mess.

If someone can tell me how to load the Full Feature Software, I will appreciate it. Maybe it will even provide the TWAIN drivers.

Thanks.

You are welcome.

My fault - I did not check that you have the same issue already open with an HP Community Agent.

Duplicate thread submission -- that is, asking the same question asked more than once at the same time -- is not supported.

and

I shall withdraw -- Experts are forbidden to interfere with HP agents when they are working an issue.

In Parting...

In general, the "Offline only" packages might install more easily than their "Easy Start" Internet-required counterparts.

In general, should the printer software not install, check and remove any "bits" of software left over from previous installation attempts.  Next, Restart the computer and log in -- try installing the printer software.

Dragon-Fur:

My previous submission was different from this one, and that previous submission had been concluded by the agent, included some private messages.  The previous issue is titled "ReadIris Pro 17 Can't Communicate with HP Officejet Pro 7740" The agent helped me to get to a point where I could realize the problem is the HP TWAIN software that is causing the problem with the ReadIris Pro 17.  In that process, I have come to realize that HP is not supporting the HP Scan TWAIN.  Thus, this post that you are responding to is my complaint and gripe about HP.   You are part of a process that I am working through.  I do not believe you are involved in an issue that is open in another post.

Now, here is my present problem.

I have done the steps that you so graciously provided to  me.  I have gone down through the 7 steps to "check and remove" any program items that might be blocking the new installation of the HP print drivers for my HP Officejet.  When I do the 8th step to install the full feature software, I get the same error that I have been getting all along.  The dialogue box returns a message that simply says "Install Failed", the software "could not be installed".  It tells me that "the older version of HP Officejet Pro 7740 series Basic Device Software cannot be removed..."

The process continues by searching for a solution, and then it tells me that I am unfortunate, "no solution to this problem can be found at this time."  And, as before, it tells me to visit HP Support so Dragon-Fur can give me the latest help and software.

And this is where you and I have become acquainted.

At this time, I am at the point of having to use my original DVD to reload the drivers.  Hopefully, I will be able to reclaim my HP Officejet printer.  If not, I will not be buying another HP product.

Thanks.

You may of course choose to abandon the printer and the HP brand -- we do not judge what people decide.

My own engagement is voluntary -- whether I answer your questions to your satisfaction is not meant to influence your choice of products.

Community Experts are different from Agents in that we are not employees of HP.

Experts represent our own best efforts -- We do not speak for HP.

I never engage in "if you don't do this, then I will do that" methods.

What to do?

Not sure, frankly.

FYI only for those reading

What about the onboard, current installation package for the full driver printer software for this printer?

The printer software, once installed, will confirm that the embedded OCR feature is no longer part of the current Web Installation Package.

If, at some point in the past, downloaded and saved an older version of the Web Pack installation package, the old OCR software will still be embedded in that version.

To install any version, pre or post OCR, you must still overcome whatever problems are preventing the installation of the printer software.

NOTE:

The embedded OCR software was removed from many installation packages in Mid-2022.

No one told us why though it's likely to have been a compatibility or license issue.

Should you still want to install the Printer Software --

The advice you've received thus far might normally remove any trace of the printer software.

Missing -- I no longer advise on the subject of Registry edits.  Should you decide to edit your system's Registry, be sure you Export the entire Registry contents before changing its contents.

The moving target in the equation is the Windows Operating System, that is, the File System that changes both as you direct it and on its own.  We know that changes made by Windows within the File System can include lost instructions, broken links, new, lost, or changed library files.   When all else fails, a generally accepted solution is to reload Windows.   That is not advice -- it is an observation based on my experience.

What else?  Check the permissions on the Temp folder(s).

C:\Windows\Temp

C:\Users\AccountName\AppData\Local\Temp

The methods found in this article generally work to clear out left over printer software "residue".

How to Force Remove a Printer That Won’t Uninstall on Windows

Should you be able to install the full driver printer software, will that get you want you want for the rest?

Unknown.

Dragon-Fur:

Once again, thank you for the outstanding effort to address my problem.  And my apologies for coming across as threatening.  Going forward, I am more cautious about HP instructions and products.  As I said earlier, their 'house' is a mess.

Short update.  I have print drivers installed.  The driver install was accomplished by installing HP Smart which then installed the drivers for my printer.  As noted in this chain, there were numerous failures while attempting to use the full-driver-update software, as offered by HP.    This last effort to install also included a thorough clearing of printer software, per the instructions you provided.

You have seen the same FIX that I have just seen related to the full update software.  That fix may explain a lot of the problem I have had with ReadIris.  I will restate the FIX here, as a matter of reference.

Fixes
  • Repackaged without Optical Character Recognition (OCR) Functionality

I have not checked the permissions, as you advised me to do.  The drivers are presently installed, so I will let well enough alone, for now.

If you would, please make a comment regarding driver installation using HP Smart.  I would like to click on that as a solution.

Again, I appreciate you working with me.  Thanks.
