HP OfficeJet 5230 All-in-One Printer

I have manged to install my HP office Jet 5230 to my new printer, it prints ok but does not scan. I have tried troubleshoot but it still fails. Has anyone else had the same problem. The PC can scan to printer, but the printer does not scan to PC. Yes its connected to the internet via USB as wifi not great here.

This is a fairly old model (introduced in 2017)--

Yes, should you want to use HP Smart, you'd best connect the printer to standard Wireless or at least Wi-Fi Direct.

 

Wi-Fi Direct uses the printer's wireless radio to connect the printer to the computer.

AND

Wi-Fi Direct provides basic Wireless capabilities, including those needed to use some of the features in the HP Smart (Windows) application.

OK - No Wireless of any kind...

 

HP Smart is not happy in a USB connected setup -- I've read that it can work but I've not seen it and cannot offer any tips that make that happen.

 

Instead, as you have likely done in the past, install the Full Feature Software on the computer.

 

The full driver printer software provides a foundation that supports printing from other programs (for example, Word and Adobe Reader) and also includes the standard HP Scan software.

 

After the full driver is installed, open the Printer Assistant shortcut on the Desktop > tab Scan > Enable the "Manage Scan to Computer" feature.

 

Will this work using only a USB cable connection?

Perhaps - if not, fall back to using HP Scan or other apps on the computer to complete your scan tasks.

Printer Software

 

If you have not yet done so, install the Full Feature Software / full driver printer software.

 

HP Full Feature Software / Full Driver printer software - supports printing and scanning from the web, printing in in other software and programs (for example, Word), and provides access to the full range of Printing Preferences / Shortcuts.  The full driver generally adds at one, possibly least one, possibly two shortcuts to the Desktop: Printer Assistant, HP Scan Assistant, and/or HP Scan.

 

NOTES:  

 

HP Scan is not installed if the printer does not support Scan.

 

The Printer Assistant is not installed if the type of full driver software does not support it.  If the printer model includes built-in Fax hardware, the software supports the setup and use of the Fax driver.

 

No Sign-in required to use full driver printer software.

 

 

Reinstalling?

 

  • Uninstall existing full driver printer software from Programs and Features.
  • If your printer includes a separate "help" in Programs and Features, uninstall that, too.
  • Restart the computer and log in.
  • If the printer is connected to the computer using a printer USB cable, remove / disconnect the cable before loading the software.

Full Driver - HP OfficeJet 5200 All-in-One Print and Scan Driver and Accessories 

 

In general, the web pack should load -

Download package > Save > Right-Click on the installation Package > Run as Administrator

 

If / When asked, opt for the Full Driver / Full Software to be installed.

 

Using USB?  (Re)Connect when instructed to do so.

 

After the software is installed, Restart the computer and sign in.

 Reminder

 Printer AssistantHP Scan Assistant, and HP Scan are each and all dependent on printer model and supported software options.

 

  • Printer Assistant – Where still supported as part of the full driver printer software
  • HP Scan – Shortcut on Desktop named for the printer model

 

  • HP Scan Assistant – For those printers that no longer provide the Printer Assistant
  • When installed, HP Universal Scan software adds a separate self-named “HP Scan” shortcut
