I consistently lose the ability to scan from the printer to my computer. When I turn the printer off and on again, I can scan one or two documents before it goes back to "accessing computer" followed by the message that the computer is unavailable. The computer always shows up on the printer's screen, and printing from my computer to the printer is unaffected. The printer and computer are connected wirelessly and it would be burdensome to always connect with ethernet plus, well, it IS a wireless computer after all.
The solution I found on HP Support is to download the HP Print & Scan Doctor 5.1 but alas, not a solution. The following screenshot is what I get when I start the Doctor. When I proceed to step one, it finds the printer installed, then it communicates with the printer, and then it tells me to take two aspirin and call in the morning I get the message that the software is not fully installed. If I try to fully install the software, if it is successful, I get bounced back to this screen pictured below.
Thanks for any suggestions you can provide. I have a Microsoft Surface Laptop (not pro) running Windows 10.1.

Thanks for the info.
This is surely not the cause as I can see this is a Windows 10 Pro.
- Search Windows for Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt from the list of search results, and then select Run as Administrator.
- In the Command Prompt window, enter Net stop stisvc, and then press Enter.A Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) service was stopped successfully message displays.
Note: if you get any error, restart your PC and repeat the steps - In the Command Prompt window, enter Sc config stisvc depend= rpcss/ShellHWDetection and then press Enter.A [SC] ChangeServiceConfig SUCCESS message displays.
- In the Command Prompt window, enter Net start stisvc, and then press Enter
A Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) service was started successfully, message displays.

Now reboot your computer and check fot any change.

Hi,
As you say you have a Microsoft Surface laptop (not pro), what exact OS is installed?
A such might have a limited OS such as Windows RT or Windows 10 S which are more limited and would not allow the HP software to work as expected and allow features such as front panel scanning.
Please click the start button and type winver, click the Winver program shown and include a screenshot of the screen in your reply.

It is working for now. It stop tomorrow so I will hold off on calling this a solution until then if that is ok.
The reason I am suspicious it will work is that when I go to start, HP, and click on the printer software, this is the response I get:
When I use the printers & scanners function in control panel, I get this screen (1), and when I choose "scanner" with the printer name, I get picture 2.
Picture 1
Picture 2
I wonder why there are two choices there and whether that has anything to do with the problems.
