HP OfficeJet 3830 - Scanner cover open error - but it's not

HP Recommended
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My nearly new HP OfficeJet 3830 has suddenly stopped scanning from the document feeder and gives me a "scanner cover open" error every time I try. I've made sure everything is securely closed, wiped off all sensors, unplugged the printer for a hard reset, and nothing is working. I'm beyond frustrated because the document feeder is the whole reason I bought this printer. I need to scan multi-page documents all day long, so this is a deal-breaker for me if it can't be fixed.

@Geokatgrl, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

I understand you are not able to scan using the document feeder. Let us try these steps:

Reset the printer

  1. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  2. Wait at least 60 seconds.
  3. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
  4. Turn ON the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
  5. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you proceed.

Note: HP recommends connecting the printer directly to a wall outlet rather than a surge protector or a power strip.

Update the printer firmware

Also, perform the steps mentioned in this document - Automatic document feeder does not pick paper or feeds too many sheets

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

This did not fix the issue. I think something is broken in the document feeder. One of the rollers isn't attached on one end. I will need to see about a replacement or refund most likely. Very frustrating to have only had it a few months with average use and it breaks for no reason. Print quality is deteriorating also, so something isn't right with the machine.

@Geokatgrl

If the issue persists, then yes, I'm afraid this is a hardware issue. Please reach out to the HP Technical Support team in your region regarding the service/replacement options for your printer.

You may create a case on the website to obtain a case number if required. Kindly watch this video to know how.

Keep me posted for any other assistance.
