HP OfficeJet Pro 6968 All-in-One Printer
macOS 10.15 Catalina

My printer has stopped scanning.  Ive tried the unplug, turn off; plug back in, turn on; I tried updating drivers etc but they are too advanced for my 2012 MacBook Air Laptop.  The computer states scanner cannot be found; and the printer states the computer needs software configured.  I'm at a loss.

@GreekGirlPhilly, Hello and welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your question. I'm here to help you get things back on track.

I understand your HP OfficeJet Pro 6968 has stopped scanning with your MacBook Air running macOS Catalina. Let's walk through some steps to get your scanner working again.

Check macOS Compatibility

Ensure your macOS Catalina (10.15) is fully updated.

  • Update macOS: Go to System Preferences > Software Update and install any available updates.

Remove and Reinstall HP Software

Let’s clean up and reinstall the correct software.

To uninstall:

  • Go to Applications > HP Easy Scan and move it to Trash.
  • Also remove any HP printer software from System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.

To reinstall:

  • Download the latest version of HP Easy Scan from the Mac App Store.

Use HP Smart App (Recommended)

HP Smart is the most reliable way to scan on macOS Catalina.

  • Download HP Smart from the Mac App Store. HP Smart
  • Open HP Smart and add your printer.
  • Use the Scan feature directly from the app.

Check Scanner Connection

If the printer says “computer needs software configured,” it may not be properly connected.

  • Ensure the printer is on the same Wi-Fi network as your Mac.
  • Try scanning via USB if Wi-Fi is unstable.
  • Restart both printer and Mac after installing HP Smart.

Reset Printing System (if needed)

If the issue persists:

  • Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
  • Right-click in the printer list and choose Reset printing system.
  • Re-add your printer and try scanning again.

I hope the information shared has been useful and resolves your concern.

Wishing you a smooth and hassle-free experience ahead!
